Hi I have a query about Acrylics. I am practising at the moment on my relative to see how I get on with false nails. I have nails experience so I thought I would extend it further. I have been having a few problems with them but not sure if this is normal. They have stayed on for a week but one nail broke when she trapped it when opening a box. Luckily the whole nail didn't crack or split, just nail tips came off. Should that have happened or because Acrylics are so strong should most of the nail have been broken ?

Are you fully trained in l&p?

What are your steps from start to finish?

Are you building a strong enough apex?

Are you building an apex or just applying tips and a thin layer of acrylic over the top?

Talk us through your application like Nails has said and we might be able to pinpoint where the issue is

No sorry I am not trained in that area, I thought I would practise different types of false nails, see how I get on, then take a course in acrylic as I work from home and I wanted to be sure I can do it before taking couse, hence that's why I am practising on sister in law only as I wouldn't do it on anyone else as you need to be qualified to do it. I don't think I am getting the ratio right as sometimes it's takes a while to paint it on evenly. First I ask her to wash hands, then I wash my hands, file, cuticle work, and then remove shine with 240 file. Apply tips and apply hydrant to natural nail, apply primer and then apply acrylic, when finished file and buff. Hope this is ok.

You shouldn't be applying L&P without being properly trained first. With the correct training you won't have these problems, or if you do you will know why, and how to rectify them. Without the proper knowledge you can cause a lot of damage when you don't know what you're doing.

That's the whole point of doing a course though; to teach you how to do it properly. You could be picking up bad or dangerous habits leaving you thinking you can't do it when really you could with the proper training and support. All your practice could be in vain if you're doing it wrong.

We're not allowed to give out advice to non professionals I'm afraid. If you want to do it definitely look into local course providers or colleges to get you started

Thank you for the advice, you are right I might be picking up bad habits. I have 6 years experience in beauty therapy and am qualified in manicures and pedicures but it's a whole new ball game with nail extensions. I have tried fibreglass and didn't like so then I tried Acrylic. I might take a course later on in the year and I will let you know how I get on but you have to be very good and quick with nail extensions, I didn't appreciate how quick and talented you have to be. I apply Shellac and I have had no problems with, love your site by the way, and thank you for a quick response.:)

If you're already qualified in Beauty and have mani and pedi certificates that's a great start and gives you a good basis to start with enhancements.

I'm also qualified in Beauty and am toying with the idea of enhancements. Where I live many people don't want to spend more than £20 so I'm weighing up whether there's actually a potential client base who would pay more. Am doing some research before taking it further.

Good luck if you decide to go for it
