Hi everyone,

I have just completed my NVQ Level 2 Beauty Therapy course and need some advice on what is best to do next. I would like to work in a salon initially for a year or so to gain experience and wondered which route was best to take for Level 3. I can do the massage route or nails route. Which do salons prefer?

I'm finding it difficult to find anyone that takes on a Level 2 qualified person and thought maybe whilst i do my level 3 which is part time (as i work full time in an office) offering to help in a salon free would help me gain a little experience/insight to the working environment and look good for when i try and gain employment after level 3.

Any advice would be fab.

Thanks :)

Hi
Well done on completing level 2 ....
I qualified on the NVQ L3 Massage Route ... My reasons ... Looking at the fact I already had completed a separate nail course on nail extensions which is how I started yrs ago ... It seemed silly to redo a qualification I already had,
The other 2 options for me were L3 massage route or general route ...
I wanted to concentrate on holistic rather than electrical treatments that I probably wouldn't end up using ... Hence my decision was made.

My advice to you is look at each course and see what you want to do and what treatments you will enjoy performing ...
Both qualifications could take you to different places ... It really depends where you want to get to ... Xxx

I'm in the same position and I'm really not sure what to do :-/ I don't think I could cope with the massage physically, hell I'm 42 this year I'd need a massage myself every night to get over it lol, but I'm stuck between nails and L3 beauty therapy make up route. I'm really not into the electrical treatments and the majority of the other choices can be done as separate courses. Like the intimate waxing, I would love to do the Kim Lawless training, I'm just unsure of spending 4 grand on a course just to want to specialise in certain areas that are available as separate courses anyway :-/

You can apply for a 24+ loan ... For level 3 qualifications ...
You don't have to pay it back untill you earn over 20k ...

Thanks for your replies. Im the same, i would prefer nails as id enjoy it more than the massage route, but the college tutor advised to take the massage route as most companies would prefer you to have that. But im not sure. I would to have to apply for the 24+ loan which is another thing im worried about as im not to clear on it, but it seems the best option over spending £3300 on the course. I read you do not pay anything back until 2016 but even then its not until you earn over £21,000.00 and the repayments a month are small. The only thing that concerns me is how much interest they put on, im unclear on this.

So if i want to work in a salon/spa, which would be best.. I could do the massage route, then take extra courses on other items. I found from level 2 i enjoyed, waxing, the lash application (strip and individual) tinting and nail treatments. I to would like to do the individual courses on intimate waxing, the semi permanent lash extensions and say lash perming etc. I would also love to learn gel, acrylics etc. So perhaps the nails route would be best? I just want to make sure ive covered every area possible to ensure i gain employment as eventually (a long way down the road) id love to have my own business. x

I'm sure that the 24+ loans are zero interest ... (As it's government funded) - but def check as I'm not 100% ... Xxx

Hi, when I trained in my level 2 I went on to do level 3 general route which was much harder then the massage root. General had massage, hot stones, all body and facial electricals and electrolysis. If this is an option I would deffs do this. You can indulges in as many separate nail courses in your extra time. Hth x

Thank you. I think thats what im going to do. Its probably best to get as much covered as possible and like you say do the nail courses and all others seperate. That way im open to more options when seeking employment. I think the course i will do, covers hot stone, aromatherapy, indian head massage, and facial electrical. I can then do the nails, waxing, spray tanning etc as short courses after.

Thanks for your help.

As a salon owner, I would only look to employ level 3 beauty therapists.

Salon owners want people with the best qualifications, and it's the same with level 2 stylists as well. If you don't get the level 3 qualification, you will be disadvantaged in the job market.

It's a very competitive business and salons need to employ the best trained with the widest skill set.

Thank you Myarka, i will do the Level 3 for sure and hope to do as many courses as possible.
