I am currently looking into going it alone and have my eye on a little shop. It would be perfect for myself to be based there and do a bit of mobile around the kids.
The only thing I am struggling with is all the things I would need. In way of licences. I have done hire for years so know what equipment would be needed, but a salon I am a bit dazed. Can anyone give me like a dummies guide to hairdressing start up.
Licences, payment systems, etc
Thanks in advance

im not opening a salon, but im opening up within a salon, the only thing i can say is watch your money! dont spend on unneccecery things until you have a strong client base! You dont need an electronic online booking system that does all these amazing things when opening up, you dont need to have a card maching if you are located not far from one and you let your clients know ahead of time. with colours, order in every other base, so get 1,3,5,7,9 and 10 so you can mix inbetween and only keep ash, gold and copper, demand a patch test for all colours and use this as an oppertunity to do a consultation to see if you indeed need to order another colour in whilst covering your legal bases at the same time. with developers, you can keep only a 10 and 40 volume and mix them together at varing ratios to get 20 and 30. it will take up to a year or more to get a regular client base, keep at it though, there will be days you only come in to do one clients wet cut and be done.

you need to have public liability insurance, two different music licences to be able to play to the public, employers liability if you decide to employ

Great advise Fabby....

I'd think very carefully about your costings....things can easily run away with you, especially if you decide to lease the equipment.
Once you're in that shop, you won't want to/be able to, do mobile clients as well!
