Have always gotten my nails done with acrylic before...
Had them done with gel a few times, ended up getting an allergic reaction.
I waited a few months then got my nails done with acrylics... had an allergic reaction to them too! I understand that they are made from the same base chemicals... but I thought maybe it was the UV light, or rather, hoped it was.
So, my question is, can I get wraps done instead?
I'm tired of my hails breaking when I try and grow them out. I can't get them to grow past my fingertips without them tearing off. I have REALLY thin nails, have had thin nails since I can remember.

Anyone?
I just want to know if it would be ok to get wraps done. I miss having my nice sturdy nails :(

This is a difficult one to answer as we don't know what type of reaction you had or what you are allergic to! It may be the nail glue or just a sensitivity/contact dermatitis from overexposure to products. I would very much doubt it's the UV, (unless you have problems in sunlight etc) as the UV exposure is so small & very inconsequential. But just by going on the info you have given I think it's going to be a case of try it & see! Sorry I can't be much more help than that! You could as an alternative try a shellac or gel manicure, if you not bothered about extra length? You also sound like you would be the perfect candidate for IBX too! Hopefully you ll find a good tech who can help you out!! X

I tried some glittery UV nail polish... and it did the same thing.
Here are the symptoms:
After a few hrs. (usually over night) I wake in the morning and my cuticles are red, puffy and Itch so badly I want to cut my fingers off. Then as the day goes on tiny 'water blisters' form. A few days later the skin peels where the blisters were, uncovering VERY sensitive new skin...
After the first reaction with sculpted gel (IBD) I tried the glitter UV polish and got the same reaction just not as bad. I waited until it all completely healed and decided to just go back to acrylics... and AGAIN same reaction. So, I get it with all "gel" products and acrylic.
This has really depressed me. I loved doing and having my nails done... It is the only thing I can really splurge on and do for myself, being an unemployed-stay-at-home-mom.

Gel II may be ok for you, it has been formulated without a lot of the ingredients that are allergens.

From the website:

Gel II™ Manicure is a two-step soak off gel polish system. It was created for those who are allergic and sensitive to gels and polishes that have base coats, bon-aids, primers, and the damaging effects they can have.

It may be worth a try, you could have just one nail done as a test.

Just a suggestion, are you using the same nail tech each time? Could it be possible that she's getting product on your skin by mistake which is causing your reaction each time? Or possibly she's using one product that she uses for acrylics and gels, I'm allergic to sani pure which I can use for both sets x

Sounds like the OP might be allergic to acrylate substances and if so, won't be able to use anything containing these substances. That includes UV cured gels, acrylics and nail glues.

Whatever you try, just try a small area first, say one finger and see what happens.

I have used the fiberglass wraps from ASP and had great results.
There are other things I have suddenly become allergic too as well... like certain cleaners. I wonder if one of my medications is causing me to be allergic to certain chemicals now... hmm
