So, I've got a question for any and all nail technicians who work in a salon setting alongside hair stylists.
My current pay rate goes something like this: I get paid minimum wage if my services for the week are lower that what what I would have made hourly. Once my service totals exceed the minimum wage I would have made, then it kicks in to the commission brackets of $0-$500 = 50%. $501-$1000 = 55%, and $1001+ = 65%.
I rarely get past the $300 mark.
I would PT on weekends and some evenings still trying to build clientele after my first year.
More often than not, I just make it past what my hourly wage would be, then only take home half of it. I averaged it out to be about $5.80 - $6.15/hour for my actual take home pay.
I'm an employee of the salon, not a booth renter. This is the first time this business owner has owned and operated her own salon after our local JCPenney closed.
Am I getting an unfair wage, or is this just how it works in the state?
