It has human proof my mum used to suffer from bad panic attacks and since she done that and took that remedy she can do anywhere without a worry in the world.

So she took this 'remedy' once did she? Then it was all gone was it??

I'd say read the packet.....not that you can....its all in chinese....

deffo not something I'd be shoving down my gob thank you very much.

Sorry, but I just do not see how a little man in a shop and cook up this mixture that 'cures you for life'. It's absolute rubbish.

Thats the problem with text on a screen.....you really can read it the wrong way sometimes. We are all trying to help her.

All I did was state my opinion about a chinese remedy. It must be pretty strong stuff to chemically alter your brains responses for life.

You say you suffer too, have you taken the same thing as your mum? Are you now panic free too then?

No i have never taken it, i got over my problem with my willpower along with rescue remedy to help me along with it.

Here's a link which you will find very useful

Mind > Information > Booklets by series > How to > How to cope with panic attacks

Whilst, I agree that some natural/herbal remedies are fantastic, we have to be careful when taking substances willy nilly - why? well what happens if you have an allergic reaction and you don't know exactly what is in the remedy for example?

In every case I would suggest proffesional help - if all else fails then yes by all means try alternative methods BUT please take care

Thats good then, sounds like you have been sucessful with willpower alone, just like me, as I said in my rather long essay of a post earlier! :)

Very well put Snuggs, such a way with words :green: x

Just to throw a spanner in the works.........

Do you think that sometimes you can 'think' yourself into being cured of something? Like taking something that says it WILL make you better, but really you are beleiving you feel better and therefore you do??

Sorry just thinking on screen, but in my personal opinion I think this is true in some cases.

oops, think I just hijacked the thread.......sorry x

thank you so much for all your responses.youve made me feel such relief just knowing that someone understands how i feel.i will definately be buying some rescue remedy tommorrow.i will let you all know how i get on with it.
sometimes i can go for weeks and be fine then other times i feel i have trouble with getting my breath for a few weeks at a time.its a very wierd feeling and when you have no control over it,it can be the most scariest thing you have ever felt.
you have all made me feel reassured and im very grateful for that.its nice to to know that we are here to help each other.thanks again.

Hmmmm. They are not all as harmless as people think. This probably shouldn't be taken with any other medication as it can alter it and possible give you side effects. Anti-depressants are generally prescribed for anxiety because anxiety is the precursor for depression and shouldn't be left untreated. Anti-depressants contain seratonin which is a chemical in which the brain is lacking. This helps to lift your mood and help with anxiety. If anxiety and panic attacks are in the family, it can be inherited and should be treated.

There is a fantastic anti-depressant prescribed by the doctor called Escatalopram and is especially for social-anxiety disorder (the fear of going out (agraphobia) (sp), claustrophobia etc. However, the doctor will always offer counselling before prescribing an anti-depressant because many people suffer due to something that has happened to them. Not everyone has a predisposition to it. I know, because I am taking Escatalopram. My mother suffered all her life so I have a double whammy. I was bullied at work by another woman but thought I had gotten over it. That was 4 years ago and was a factor in my retirement. I have been taking 10mg for 2 years now and life is fantastic. Don't want to be without them, to be honest. :)

Please show me doctor that takes other routes than just offering anti depressants first off, as I certainly have never met one.

I am 100% sure you can take rescue remedy with other meds, as it states nothing in the leaflet warning about interaction with other drugs and can even be taken by children. (I know what you mean though, i.e St Johns Wort (a herbal remedy) cant be taken with the contraceptive pill)

I agree that seratonin is our natural 'happy' drug, but there is a BIG difference between depression and general anxiety. Im not trying to sound rude or abrupt here, its just the way I type  sometimes I come accross as a right stroppy old cow, but I'm not :green:

Yep, you're right. Not all doctors offer it, I can only say my own medical practice must be good then. :) And, yes, it was St. John's Wort that came to mind but I couldn't remember what it was called. Having a senior moment!

Anyway, I guess that what works for some doesn't work for others and we shouldn't lump them all in the same basket. There are varying degrees of anxiety and depression, some are worse than others and need long-term medication. So, if something works for them, then they should stick with it. Just putting in my 2p's worth! lol! :)

i must admit ive been under 3 diff doctors in two diff areas and never once been offered counselling or anything, if ive gone feeling panicky or stressed i got no different a response to when i was actually depressed many years ago, here you are try these tablets

those of you that do have wonderful caring doctors, hang on to them, god knows there aint enough of them to go round lol

i still think that the strength of mind, calming thoughts, will power etc is a very large part of getting better, but obviously its hard to focus on this when your feeling so stressed/low/scared etc, but it can be done

good luck whatever route you decide to take hun

well !! Where do I start!

From personal experience, I think that prescribed medication CAN be the answer for SOME sufferers. I think it scares people when they find out that they are being prescribed anti-depressants. They are also used to treat anxiety, it DOESN'T mean that your doctor is fobbibg you off and telling you you're depressed  !

Someone mentioned counselling earlier, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is known to be a successful form of treatment.

It is essential that you try to understand your own personal pattern of panic attacks, sometimes we think that it just happens, but if you talk to a professional they will try to help you understand why you have an attack and then between you, you can set yourself small goals to achieve.

From personal experience I have ended up creating a vicious circle for myself with anxiety. I had a bad attack in my partners car on a local road. I then spent the next 2 months AVOIDING either travelling in partners car OR travelling on that particular road!! Hey presto!! I had made my anxiety a bigger problem!!

I'm not saying that you need to face your biggest trigger or fear tomorrow, it has to be little steps.

Sometimes you need to put yourself into a situation, so you can test either coping techniques or breathing exercises that you have learned.

It became all to easy for me to AVOID situations I wasn't comfortable with, but it started to affect my life too much and I am working on overcoming anxiety:)

One day at a time xxxxxxxxx

i too have done the avoiding thing.i felt really ill one day when i was in the middle of having my hair done by my friend that i went to school with.i'd had my hair done loads of times before this so i dont know what made this day any different.im sure it was all i my head though but after that i thought thats it its going to happen the next time i go aswell now etc... anyway i had to go so most of the time im ok with it.but as you said its easier to avoid than to do it.as most of you i have good days and bad days sometimes im fine wit things sometimes im not.i just hope i can make it better before it takes over the whole of my life as its already so easily taken over part of it.

Tracey hun,

Are you afraid of being sick by any chance? xx

I too had the thing at the hairdressers!

I figured out that it was when I was having my colour done and the foils were all pushed forward in front of my face, I felt claustrophobic!!

I just ask my hairdresser to clip them back now, although that was after several visits quietly panicking in my seat  !!

sometimes doctors will try a simple thing like beta blockers first.......youve heard of your "fight or flight" usually you would be tried on these first, you must see your g.p..........
sometimes panic attacks can be an underlying problem such as, hormones (as in endocrine..adrenal, thyroid ovaries etc) .
best to see a gp get your bloods checked out first and foremost....you can be recommended things....but if you just go and buy something from a herbalist or health shop...you shouldnt.
