Im a newly trained nail tech (in CND shellac) and I’ve been practicing on a few people before I start my salon job.

However, some people when I’ve told them about shellac, say that they can’t use it because their nail beds are ‘too oily’ and the shellac chips or peels right off.

Is this an actual issue people can have with shellac? Or is it to do with prep? Personally haven’t had this issue with anyone I’ve practiced on yet. However I have had some chipping on myself and am thinking of trying duraforce top coat or nail fresh...

So basically what I am trying to say in my long winded way....! Is that are some people’s nails actually unsuitable for shellac and In that case should they not use solar oil etc? Or is it just technique? Do you have any tips on treating people with these types of nails if that is the case?

Thanks in advance!

A bit of both, there are some clients who dont get on with Shellac but its rarely due to oily nails, thats a bit of a cop out excuse used by some techs to explain away issues. Shellac issues tend to be down to weak and/or thin natural nails. There are also clients who maybe don't get on with Gel or L&P extensions, no one product suits all people.

I can’t wear shellac because I have naturally very thin, weak nail that bend easily. It doesn’t last too well on me because of this as it doesn’t have the strength of other gels.

I'm the same, it doesn't even last me two weeks.

So if someone has strong nails that are quite thick and shellac chips it would be more likely prep issue? Can imagine weak nails not taking to shellac well due to its polish like qualities Xxx

Chipping can be many things, if someone has perfect natural nails and chipping is on all the nails, I would suggest it's either improper curing, too thick at the free edge, insufficient capping or poor application (or any combination of those).

If it's just one or two nails, more likely to be client not taking proper care of them
