A lot of the time I'll type my posts into word, use the spell check there and then copy and paste the text into my post here. I can't download the spell check from here either.

I find this thread offensive, and my genuine first thought of reading it and some of the replies is, Who the hell do some people think they are?????

Some people have not had the benefit of a good, uninterrupted education of a high standard. Through no fault of their own, some people leave school with little or no ability to read or write. What may look like a careless thread written by an uneducated moron might actually have been written by someone who has painstakingly crafted that thread to the best of their ability, and for us to make a snap judgement based on what we believe others ought to be capable of is downright offensive and narrow minded.

Would it bother me if I went to a therapist who couldn't spell? Hell no. Lots of people who struggle with the written word choose careers where they can use hands on skills, the beauty industry being one of them.

Of course, spellcheck can be used, but lots of people have very limited computer skills and so what may seem like a simple task to one person might be completely above the ability level of someone else. Reading the replies on this thread, some people have already had difficulty in utilising this tool.

So, lets not sit wallowing in our own self-importance assuming that everyone who cannot spell and/or use spellcheck is an incompetent moron who deserves to be slated by threads such as this. I agree it can be frustrating when a thread is badly spelt or structured, and I have stopped reading a thread sometimes because it's hard work, but what I have NEVER done is made assumptions that the writer should try harder, you've no idea about that person and so you've no right to make an assumption

I think the only assumptions being made are a propos people's spelling.

I don't think its too much to ask that people use spellcheck....I am sure if they can log in, create a thread, post a reply and hit send they are more than capable of clicking on the the little ABC ...

No-one is asking for replies to be written with perfection every time.

The thing with spellcheck is that the word has to be spelt almost right in the first place to be able to give options. Right or wrong?

By the way, my pet spelling hate is 'lose' as in 'I need to lose weight (and I do). People often spell it as 'loose' and it drives me nuts.

I woke up in the middle of the night and suddently realised that I'd spelt formally as formerly on a thread and I had to get up and change it. How sad is that?

Today we went to my nephew's christening in Salisbury. We walked past a pub that I had been to a few years ago and I told my husband how I had been thrown out of it. He was rather surprised because I'm such a mild mannered tory-like individual! The reason I was ejected? I was so appalled at the spelling, punctuation and grammar errors on their menu/wine list that I couldn't help myself from correcting them all. I took the annotated sheets to the bar and asked to see the manager who duly arrived, and I suggested he might want to have them proof read in future. I went back to my seat and within minutes a jolly irate and coarse woman appeared in front of me asking "who the f*** did I think I was to criticise her spelling?!"
I told her that it created wholly the wrong impression about the place if she couldn't even spell "potatoe" and "vintige". She took me, unceremoniously, by the arm and forcibly removed me!
How rock and roll, eh!

Hasn't happened to me yet, but likely will at some point. I'm absolutely anal about how I write. But then, when "free-time" actually existed in my life, it was my favorite pastime.

These days, I'm getting frustrated with my over sensitive new keyboard (hubby was trying to be nice) that doesn't allow me to rest fingers on the home-keys without typing letters, so I'm getting a gazillion type-o's that I'm incessantly trying to correct (yeah, so if you see an "e" or an "i" in the wrong place, it's the damn keyboard!:irked:)
My other keyboard, you had to click the keys HARD to type which is what I'm most accustomed to. This one is waaaaaaaay oversensitive and drives me BONKERS with the incessant corrections I have to make.:grr:

ok, rant over

ps: to other persons taking offense, you're taking it where none was intended. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with asking someone to click on the 'abc' button to spell check.
We are routinely asked by mods to do our threads/posts a certain way, put them in appropriate forums, title them correctly, etc etc. ALL to make this site cleaner, eaiser to use etc..... It's not meant as insults, and to take as such is being over sensitive.
Correct spelling helps to keep the site just as tidy and easy to use. PARTICULARLY in searches.

I luv carlssss spelling and the threaaaads about talkin in txt.
No I've not had a drink but I soooooooooooooooooooo wish
Come on everyone:hug:

I do see Carl's point but I'm going to take him to task on something, I actually couldn't care less that my hair dresser cant read and write, what I care about is that she can cut my hair to such a high standard that it still keeps its style 6 weeks later. In fact I haven't had the cash to have it cut for the last 20 weeks and its still looking good.
So the comment about not having confidence in someone to do a good service because they can't spell is very hurtful towards people who are not as fortunate as himself. And yes Carl you have hurt a few geeks with your comments, word blindness is a recognized disability and some other geeks just didn't have that good an education.
So yes now you're going to have a go at me, but thats ok this old crone can take it:lol:
Some of our ladies can't.

How sad am I, I'm on holiday at my inlaws in Inverness and having read this topic on my Ipod I borrowed my inlaws computer to post

I have 5 sons at school, one has a difficulty and we know he will struggle with spellings, the others don't, when they spell badly they are doing so for no other reason than they didn't check or put the time and effort in. We ask of them all that they do the best they can and thats all thats needed of anyone anywhere. Thats all it takes in here too. If I got a letter from my bank with spelling mistakes all the way through, or leaflet, it would reflect on the bank, surely? I'd think it's the same for any bussiness then.

If my spelling isn't up to scratch today it's because I cant just download the spell checker on a computer that isn't mine as they have a download limit
