Watch some videos, grab a dolls head and practice, practice, practice.
Don't attempt it on a client until you're fairly confident with your technique.

As long as your using a product that is for free hand it should be fine although they don’t always lift aswell as bleach does . I’ve done a ombre with bleach and back combed the root a lot but that was on virgin hair I probably wouldn’t trust bleach on coloured hair
