Hi everyone!

I've been offered an interview next thursday 6th Feb, and of course I'm very nervous. Do I ask if a trade test will be involved? The manager just emailed me saying she'd like to arrange an interview, no mention of a trade test. I've not gone to many, I'm coming to the end of my CIBTAC Level 3 and am on the job hunt! Is it ok to ask if a trade test will be carried out? If it's best I shouldn't ask, what should I wear to an interview? I need all the advice I can get, any info would be much appreciated! :)

I always assume a trade test will be involved. In my experience the shortest trade test I have ever done has just been a back massage and the longest trade test I ever did included back massage, facial, file and polish and a leg wax.

I always wear a tunic with neatly done minimal makeup in order to show a potential employer what they can expect of me in terms of a smart and professional appearance. I read in a book that you can turn up smartly dressed in order that you can change into the tunic but that feels like too much of a faff in my opinion.

Sometimes a trade test and interview happen at the same time (which I think is better because it's a sign of the interviewer being more organised in my opinion) but sometimes they can interview and then shortlist people for a trade test.

After college, the things I learnt about interviewing were to be honest about your strengths and bring a lot of enthusiasm to the interview but also be honest about any treatments that you're not confident about because it can be less awkward than doing a trade test not very well. Just make it clear that you are keen to learn and return someone's investment in you by being a long term member of staff who is keen to learn.

Best of luck :)

Thanks LauraKate for your reply! A friend advised me to ask so I can be prepared (of course i'd arrive prepared incase anyway) but it's nice to know what I'm walking in to - especially as I'm starting out with this! I ended up just saying "May I ask will a trade test be carried out on the same day?" I hope this is okay. I'm quite a nervous person and working in a job where I'm very unhappy due to the treatment there and completely nothing to do with beauty, have been on the job hunt for a while and means a lot to have a chance at change - especially in something I love to do! Would do me a world of good and the boost I need if I landed a job in a salon. I just want to work in a salon while I'm training as a therapist, it'd give me so much confidence I'd really improve and be so happy. Fingers crossed for next week! I'll take your advice on board :) x

That sounds fine :) good luck!

Thought i'd just give a little update on what happened, I believe the interview went fine - we seemed to have bounced off each other and I gave off a positive energy but there was no trade test like she said there would be "if the interview goes well". So when I shook her hand, said thank you and goodbye I started to die inside a little as I thought maybe she thought it didn't go well! Perhaps they were busy (the receptionist said there were more interviewees and clients to see) and maybe (hopefully) she'll arrange a trade test with me another day. And if not - I'll purely put it down to experience! I've got another interview lined up somewhere else next week. Hopefully some good luck comes my way soon!
