Being doing mobile since before Christmas after a break of nearly 10 years. (always worked in salons before that). Its going really well considering that I have not advertised at all. Just started on a few family and friends and word of mouth seems to do the trick for me.
Thing is I had a call from a lady this eve who wanted me to do her colour and cut (rec by a friend).
She explained on phone that she gets a tint on front, semi on rest and hi lights all over as shes going a bit grey and wants to gradually go lighter.
I havent done any semis at all yet (since I left salon years ago) and a bit nervous about doing them in peoples houses too cause they do tend to be messier than tint. I don't even have a semi shade chart yet.
I explained to her that I have been gradually getting back into doing colours and I am a total perfectionist so would only take on to do it if I was 100% sure I could do what she wanted. I told her that so far I have done mostly highlights and tints and so far everyone has come back for further appointments.
I explained that I am very happy to call and have a look at her hair, we can have a chat about it and I can then have a think about it. (which is true)
She was very nice and understood perfectly (or seemed to) where I was coming from.
I came off the phone shaking on the inside ...I am such a big wuss.....
Is this fair enough of me? Above all I really want to offer the best I can to my very valued clients. I would not take a chance on anything as I really want to offer a professional service and so far feel that its working.
Am I mad...or going mad...?? I really miss having a few stylists knocking about for support:confused:
Thanks for reading x

good on you for getting back out there. it can be really nerve wracking if you have had a break and then try again..... especially without the emotional and professional support of other stylists.
have you thought of sending yourself on a refresher course? ive not heard good things about these so would recommend a basic colour course instead. its aimed at college leavers really and will just reinforce the basic skills that you already have.
it does sound like it is more of a confidence issue. if you are unsure, clients will pick up on it and it could affect your business. i would seriously consider enrolling on a course at your wholesalers, if they do them.
hope this helps and good luck!!!

Thanks Marie,
re the refresher course, I am doing a foundation colour course with Wella soon and if its good I'll sign up for more. I also have my name down for a cutting workshop with a fab local salon. I think you are right about it being a confidence issue but surely I can choose the clients I am happy to do?
I feel calmer this morning although a look in the colour touch shade chart in wholesalers has done nothing to encourage me...I really am a long time away

it will all come together eventually.
as far as picking the clients you feel confident doing.... there is no problem with that. but i personally think if you turn someone away once then they wont ask again.
as far as the colour chart incident.... i use Goldwell which is a number and letter system which is easier but all you need to do is learn what each of the individual numbers mean. its much easier when you break it down
