Hi

I have a lady that has highlighted hair, natural shade is ash blonde. she wants to go darker (mid brown). I have been reaading the forum and I understand that I should pre-pig the hair first (didn't learn that bit at college). Could I used a Dia color to pre-pig and if so which colour would be best?

Thanks
Su

Hiya

Am new to the boards so hope its ok for me to post this

I am a quailfied hairdresser and like yourself didnt learn about pre pig in college, Only think that would make me not pre pig is if the client was unsure bout the change,
I have recently myself gone from blonde to brown myself and was unsure weather it would suite me as am fair complexion with this in mind i didnt pre pig my own hair as would of been worse trying to get back blonde, Dont know if this helps or not, But i would defo see if she's 100% sure bout stayn brown x

Hi

Thanks for your reply, so I guess you are happy with your colour and it turned out ok? Out of curiosity, what colour and brand did you use?
Su

You can prepig with diacolour first if you like, the colour you use depends how dark you are gonna take the hair with the tint. Some colour brands don't need prepigging first, as they have balanced tones in them. EG Redken colour fusion. If in doubt you can always ring the technical hotline for your colour brand which is usually printed inside the box. Bear in mind they will only assist hairdressers. (for those non hairdressers reading this!!!)

hi there.
Yes you should pre-pigmentate with a coppery red shade if you want to go to mid brown. That's assuming you mean a base 4 or 5 shade.
Don't choose a too strong copper red, otherwise it will overpower the base shade. I can't tell you the exact pre-pig shade to use, as I don't know what colour house you use. I can only give you info on Igora Royal and Koleston.

:)

Well personally i would use Matrix color Sync here, no pre pig, and 1 2 1 mix, contains ceramide so will leave hair very shiny and Healthy.
Beautiful shades and i use this range a hell of a lot for color refreshing, costs £4.99 a tube for 84ml.

Im here on the matrix colour sync. i solely use wella koleston but when going from blonde to dark i ALWAYS use the matrix range. no need for pre pigging lasts really well no uneven fading or flat tones. I use 5wn for this mainly gives a lovely rich brown tone or 6g works very well if not wanting to go as dark but has lovely golden tones in. But as always i would carry out a test piece beforehand.

Hi

I use Koleston. I wanted to use Matrix but every supplier site I try, doesn't deliver to my area (Hertfordshire) which seems strange.

Thanks

Hi
I do use Koleston, have you any advice?
Thanks

Hi Su.
If you want to achieve a base shade 4/0, or 5/0, I would pre-pig first with say koleston 6/43
If you want to achieve a base shade 6/0 0r 7/0, I would then pre-pig with a less intense color like koleston 7/34

If her hair is very porous, I would use color touch for the pre-pig, then Koleston for the base shade.

:)

Just out of curiosity, if the lady wanted lowlights rather than a full head, could you apply Koleston/CT to prepig and go over it with your target colour straight away without washing it off?

You can apply the base shade without washing off the prepig, but I have only ever done that if the hair is really porous. But you would have to use a hairdryer to dry in the pre-pig first before you apply the base shade.
If she wanted to get rid of all her bleached highlights first, I would pre-pig the whole head first, then add the chosen base shade to color back.
Then after that you can start from scratch and do your low lights. But you would have to pre-lighten on the foils before you add your chosen lowlight shade. But obviously bear in mind the condition of the hair before and after the color correction to assertain whether it is safe to continue with prelightening and the lowlights.

SORRY BUT THIS PROBABLY DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE WHATSOEVER.
BELIEVE IT OR NOT, I UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN.:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

In general it is difficult to wash the pre-pig off the foils, because you would have to dry the hair again with the foils still on and most of the foils would probably fall out in the process. URRRRR :o:o

Hi there
So would you use Colour Touch because it's kinder with the hair being porous? (sorry, still learning!)
Thanks
Su

Hi Su.

Yes you can use color touch for the pre-pig using 10 vols.

Very porous/damaged hair always grabs colour very easily. Thats why its ok to pre-pig with a demi or even a semi permanent colour.

Also a point to remember is that if a client has porous hair and wants to go alot darker. The desired base shade should be a shade/level lighter than the desired shade, because porous hair usually ends up darker because it grabs the colour so easily.

:)
Troy.

Sorry Su.

I forgot your main question.

Yes the Color Touch and any Demi colours are kinder to the hair.
They don't contain any ammonia.
Obviously you still have to add the low strength peroxide, because you must open up the hair cuticle to allow the demi color to partially enter the hair.

Sometimes you can prepig with permanent tints using 10 vols, but I would only do this if the clients hair is in very good condition or very course/strong.

But again, if the clients hair is very porous/damaged and fine, you can just pre-pig with a semi colour like color fresh or Symbio. Then instead of washing the pre-pig out, you can just blow dry the hair with the pre-pig still in, then apply your Koleston colour straight over the top.

:)

Hi Troy

Ok, that's really helpful. Thanks very much for your help.

Yes, also thanks for your reply! Don't worry, it does make sense.

I have read all the replies on this and cannot beleive how complicated the Weela system is, on Matrix just one tube a 5WN would of done this, 42 ml and 42ml of activator, Simples ¬ cost £ 4.99 a tube for84ml, Wella seems complicated and expensive procedure too....
