Hello!!

I am a fully qualified hairdresser, however I've been out of the business for the last couple of years due to other commitments. I'm now back and trying to re-build my clientele.

I have a lady booked in a couple of weeks and she would like to go from bleach blonde to a deep red colour. I currently use Wella Professional products and was going use Wella Colourtouch Semi Permanent. I also know you have to pre-pigment the hair prior to applying the desired colour. The thing I need advice on is I wasn't sure on what colour to use to pre-pig? And whether there is any colours in particular that can be recommened that will give a rich red colour. I have explained that it will fade due to her hair being pourous but I wanted to do my best to try and avoid it!! Please help!!!

Thank you x:green:

Can anyone help???..........

You don't need to pre pig if you are colouring her hair red! You would only pre-pig if you were going from say blonde to brown, and you would use a gold/red so that the brown wouldn't look green. There are some nice reds in colour touch, good luck! x

Thank you for the advice, I just thought it may be best to pre-pig to prevent it from fading as quick x

I would def pre pig first with a semi then a permanant colour, 2 give the colour the best chance of holding. I would use the same colour in the semi as the permanant I was going 2 use.

Why would you colour the hair twice?? It doesn't make sense..to put a deep red on blonde, you are depositing tone not lightening or covering grey so no need to use a permanent colour as this will use 6% - this is not needed at all on bleached hair. Also, doing 2 colours one after another - would you charge your client twice?

I'm definitely going to use semi permanent as the molecues are larger so the colour holds better. I am just worried that after a couple of washes, she'll be left with a horrible whishy washy pink colour. I know it will fade regardless as she is so blonde, however I wasn't sure if there was any tips on how to try and avoid this x

Are semi molecules not smaller which is why it stains easier???

Semi molecules don't penetrate the hair shaft which is y it's a semi. I don't see why you would pre-pig if colouring red. It will fade quicker but better to offer a re-fresh in a few weeks x

How bleached is her hair and what condition is it in? What is her current shade and what is the target shade?

If it's very light and you want to take it down to a 7, for example, it would probably need a copper semi to pre-pig and a 50/50 base/target mix, otherwise there will be nothing for the target shade to grab onto.

Her hair is bleached up to a level 12, so quite blonde. Although her hair isn't is terribly bad condition, her natural shade is probably a 9 or a 10 and she wants to get down to a level 6. I was thinking maybe mix 50/50 so it won't be so bright. Would you recommend semi or a permanent?? x

I'd use a quasi x

What's a "quasi"? x

It's in between a semi and a permanent. Usually lasts 25-40 washes (depending on brand).

It will fade regardless of how many colours you do because of how blonde she is. I agree with just doing the one colour and not using a pre-pig and the more times its coloured, the more it will stick

Agree! :green:

That's probably what I will do. I did say to her when we had the consultation that it will fade and recommended another appointment 2 weeks later to touch up. Fingers crossed!! Thanks everyone! x

no need to pre-pig, i would just mix maybe 60% red and 40% base to give it depth and a chance of sticking, quasi colour is best for this also. at the end of the day if she chooses to go from bright blonde to red then she'll expect it to fade :)
