Hi just popping over from nail geek for a bit of advice.

My hair is a medium brown at the moment which I have been dying with a box dye for about 8 years (please don't shout at me lol) my natural hair colour is dark blonde/light brown. I am scared of having my hair done at the salon after a terrible outcome 10 years ago but I managed to brave going to ask for advice.

I wanted to go blonde but the hairdresser advised because I dye my own hair there is build up on the ends so she will have to bleach the whole lot then dye it a lighter brown then wait a while before it will go blonde. I'd this right? I wanted some advice as I'm so scared but I want blonde hair :( will it be ok? Can i go straight ti blonde or will it have a ti be a shade or so lighter beforehand? She seemed a bit unsure and kept asking her colleague for advice but she was on the phone :(. My hair is shoulder length if that helps :s thanks x

You should get a strand test and see the results that way you can see the colour and condition before you get anything else done. If I was you I'd gradually build up to blonde with highlights, it will take a while. :)

If you have been layering color for years, going blonde in one swoop most likely wont happen, it will have to be done in stages. Bleaching may not be necessary, but trying to remove all those layers of old color will be extremely hard. That hair stylist was correct in letting you Know it won't happen immediately. There is a chance it would, but chances are slim. Just be prepared for a project.

Thanks for the advice. The lady seems nice enough but I just needed to be 100% as nice doesn't always mean good does it lol. My sister told me about her hairdresser and how good she is so I might go see her for a strand test and see what she says. My sister knows how scared I am of hairdressers so il get her to come shove me through the door! Lol thanks again x

If you've got a build up of colour I'd use a colour remover such as Affinage rather than a bleach bath. A bleach bath will dry out your hair.

Then depending on the results and hair condition, I'd add some blonde highlights.

For this sort of change, you need to go to a good colourist and be prepared to pay!

Haircuts suggestion is the best way to go! Ask your colorist if they're familiar with Affinage color remover or Vanish and use that to remove the box dye before deciding on highlights or all over color :)

I've not heard of Vanish colour remover. Who makes it?

We have Vanish as a stain remover for clothes in the UK but presumably your Vanish is a different product, lol?
