Reading through some threads here i am actually disgusted that certain businesses do not pay business rates while the rest of us carry them financially ! No wonder our rates are so bloody high! It would be interesting to know how many people actually PAY towards our community and how many people opted out ?

If the commercial property is under a certain sq ft then you get 50% relief, this is topped up to 100% by the government.

If you are over a certain sq ft, you will get a discount but unsure as to how much, then that percentage alter depending on the area until no discount is given

For example a property is over 4000 gets no discount.

If you rent out a room to another business, that area can be removed from your amount and you might fall lower into a discounted bracket, the person renting the room will be classed as another business and ve charged, but will get full relief because it's just a small room.

We have a sign shop and certain areas are charged or added up differently, showroom is the highest rated, work areas and storage at different rates.

I'm far more offended by massive companies finding loopholes to avoid paying massive amounts of tax than I am small businesses being given rate relief. Not a lot in this country benefits very small business but this does.

Those not paying aren't avoiding paying, they're making use of the discounts offered to small businesses. Good for them. There was also a relief for those retailing in isolated areas that helped small businesses, but no surprise, they've stopped that one .

Would you be so offended if your business received rate relief?

Are you for real??

I suggest you have good read of replies....

You make it sound like they are all avoiding paying. They get help/discount. Which by the way gov operates I'm sure they will find away to abolish those too.

For the last three years that I have had my business I have been exempt. I get a letter stating that's there's £0.00 owing each year. This is not my fault and I didn't "opt out" I'm just under the threshold.

You're disgusted with the wrong group of people!

Larger corporations make use of the tax loopholes the government bestows to ensure they pay the minimum amount of taxes they can legally get away with.

The country effectively loses millions of £'s to enable the highest earners to freeload at the expense of the lower paid members of society who have no choice as their taxes are deducted at source and VAT is automatically added to the purchases they make including food and heating.

Small business owners and employed people are the bedrock of the community. They're precisely the people who actively support their local community by sponsoring local groups and volunteering for local causes.

I get small business rates relief and if I didn't have that I would really struggle so I think it's great they do this to help small businesses

Business rates are collected by the council but go to the Government (although this is changing in the next few years and will be more like council tax). That's why we still have to pay for our bins. So the local community didn't lose anything and gained the benefit of a healthy business pulling in customers and employing people.

Oooof! Put ya dummy back in! Take it up with the council then if you don't like it! no point in making us sound like a bunch of dole bums!

I genuinely thought all businesses in the NP area were exempt, as long as the rateable value was low, there's no need to be disgusted!

Your not carrying my business either!

At 430 square meters I bet my salon is waaaay smaller than yours if your paying 12k anyway, if you want to run a business in a large town you've got to pay it, simple! If I'd have had to pay it I'd just get on and do it, it's like moaning about a council tax bracket, if you don't like it move!

I'm assuming your salon is in Newport or another of the large towns in NP whereas mines in a little village, I made the choice to go small to keep my overheads low, I only found out there were no rates after I'd signed the lease too.

I don't know what your last sentence means? No one opts in or out of rates?

No one opts out! You either pay because of the size of the property is above a certain sq foot or you don't because the size falls below the rateable threshold.

I've been exempt for two years and now all of a sudden I'm paying again, I'm not going to get my bum in my hands about it, it is what it is!

In my opinion our government should be helping small business's more.

Totally agree @Carlalouise. Every budget, every government, I look to see what they have done to help small businesses and it's not a lot. Nmw went up, now we have living wage and pensions. It's one thing after another. The low rates can help a lot of people x
