Hi all, I've just gone to do my mums nails and when I removed the gel polish I noticed her nails were very flakey and one quite discoloured. I've atta ed a pic. I e been using Ibx on her for the last 3-4 appointments as she hasn't issues with other nails but not this one? I'm just really confused as to what it could be? I was wary to reapply the gel polish as I'm not sure why it's done this so have just done another Ibx application and told her to use cuticle oil and we'll keep an eye on it. Any help appreciated. Thanks xxx

I think it is Fungus in early stages. I was taught when in school that fungus starts out yellow, then green then brown/black. So I think it's the beginning of a fungus.

Oh cripes! Should I advise her to see a doctor?

You CANNOT tell a fungus just by looking at the nail . A culture would have to be sent off to be analysed . This could be several things and the most likely is the beginning of the dreaded 'greenie ' . Pseudomonas bacteria . This happens where air and moisture is trapped between the overlay and the natural nail causing the bacteria to thrive- could be caused by lifting or trauma . The darker the stain the deeper the bacteria has gone . However the good news is that if it IS this then you can just cleanse the nail thoroughly and then reapply product ( make sure you throw away file used and through clean any metal tools used as can be transferred ) which in effect will 'strangle ' the bacteria taking away from it what it needs to thrive - 'Air and moisture '

I am not saying that it is defo this but could be . If you have reapplied the product I suggest that at her next appt ( make it 2 not 3 weeks ) you remove colour and inspect . If it was a greenie then it should not have got worse if you followed correct procedure but if it has then visit to Gp would not be a bad idea

I did think immediately it could be a greenie. Not experienced it before but this nail is problematic for her, hence the Ibx treatment. I think I might suggest to her to see a doc just incase. I didn't reapply any product as I just wasn't sure. Will chuck out the files. I did t use any tools as of clocked it before them so they should be ok. Would barbicide be sufficient to kill this if I saw it again? X

FYI...this is the nail prior to me ever having done anything to it. I've been using Ibx in her since Jan and generally it seems to have improved it apart from now x

When you use nail polish always put a base coat then polish, then the top coat. If you put the polish on the nail with out a base coat applied first.
For one the polish is more likely to come off and it also cause the nail to become stained or brittle. Clean the nail really good with nail polish remover before you paint a nail to remove old polish residue.

Its looks similar to my aunts.. I thought it could be nail separation.. x
