Hi, I work in a beauty salon. I do lashes etc. My mam usually comes into the salon where I work for me to do her lashes and she only just started coming when I learned to do them to practice on. They are £30 an infil and she asks can I just do them at home if she pays for the stuff? Is this allowed as my employer fired another girl for doing lash clients at home. But if it’s your close family is it different?

It depends what agreement you have with the salon. If no work is allowed outside the salon then it does not matter if its your mum, friend or neighbour and you need to respect that. There might be a clause in there that will allow you to offer treatments to family but your best bet is to speak to the salon owner and ask? You dont want to jeopardize your work for the sake of this x

Your employer doesn’t own you 24/7 outside of work, and cannot dictate what you do in your own time.

Also, it’s pretty normal for most hairdressers/therapists, nail techs to provide their services to their family & friends at home when they’re not working in the salon.
(Although, that isn’t necessarily a good thing as some people will just take advantage and you won’t get a proper day off.)

I don’t see a problem with you doing your mum (or family) assuming you use your own tools and products and you’re not making a profit from it.

If you were actively advertising your services (e.g. via social media) and clearly trying to build up your own business alongside your work in the salon, it would clearly be considered a ‘conflict of interest’ and the employer would be within their rights to ask you to leave.

The tricky situation here is that if you haven’t worked there for long, you won’t have many rights under current employment law and your employer can just let you go.

If neither your mum or you are advertising the fact, I’d say ‘crack on’.

I’m actually a level 3 apprentice so in my contract it doesn’t say it anywhere ??

If you’re an apprentice, I’d be pleased you were getting in some extra practise.
Are you training with a college on day release? If so, have a word with your tutor.

I go to college one day a week and do the rest of my hours at college! But my boss is funny about us doing stuff outside work

I would still speak to your boss. Honesty is the best option and if you say that its only your mum or whoever then your boss might be fine about it but if you go behind her back then it looks as if you have something to hide and are maybe trying to take clients away from the salon. x
