Question for stylists and possibly consumers who've conquered similar dilemma:

How does one disagree with a stylist without offending them and at the same time getting them to actually take me seriously?

Here's my personal situation : I am in my 40's and have lived in three cities hence I've had many hairdressers. I've been getting color since 1983. I learned a lot about my own hair which is a level 6. BUT it's extremely thick, heavy, strong, straight. Resistant.
I like a lot of my own color left in with a light mix of level 8 and 9 gold beige highlights. In order to get his I need my hair bleached and toned. No color, whatever brand had ever got me there without orange. My hairdresser thinks he can do it with color and wants to try color I've never had a stylist get great results with color. Including him, several years ago the ash hi lift highlights he put in me were orange. I remember, though he doesn't seem to. He is also always pressuring me to put in more highlights( not financial thing, just opinion).I think I look better with more of the darker. I don't want to have to defend it every visit. Especially he did me blonde for years. Now I'm into something different. I
Second and more minor is I like heavily layered hair, spliced, point cut, etc to thin. I do NOT like thinning shears. I don't like the idea of lopping away random pieces. Like I said my hair heavy and straight, my cut needs to be perfect. It always looks and lasts better with weight is removed more precisely with scissors. He just a bit dismissive like "girl, all this hair you have, it won't be missed"
When I say anything to him he' seem a bit annoyed and like what do you know? Let me say in case this is coming off wrong, I do really like him and how he does my hair. He's very talented and I love him to death. He's just very fierce and fabulous and I would like advice on getting my point across. I actually took the number of a woman I met whose color and cut, I liked. The same day I got a card from him, and I realized I really love him and he does my hair great if we could get past this , would be perfect.
I know this is a novella sorry but any advice is appreciated.

Hey.
If you have a great relationship with your hairdresser maybe when you ring to book your next appointment ask for an extra 15/20 mins in the beginning as you would like to talk about your service beforhand.
I always listen to my clients and ask how theyve got on with their hair in the lat few weeks in between visits.
If hes coloured your hair before and it didnt work for you but hes suggesting it again, tell him your really grateful that he wants to try and make it work, however from past experience it hasnt workd and youd love what he does now so why change it?

In regards to cutting hair, every hairdresser, as you will probably know, cuts hair differently and if he is using thinners and you dont like them, tell him.

If you feel that you cant say any of the above to him then may i suggest you try a new hairdresser?
