Colour advice please

Hello hair geeks

I am a skin geek but would like some advice on changing my hair colour. I have been dyeing my hair black for the past 8years. My natural hair colour is brown. I would like to become a brunette again. I was thinking dark brown first and something lighter a few weeks later. Is it going to an easy process to do this - will it damage my hair ?People been saying I will have to have my hair highlighted first -which will quite damage my hair apparently?
I really have no idea with this - any advice much appreciated.

Hi. We'll you will definite have to lighten with bleach as permanent color will not lift previous coloring, especially with the continuous use use black. You can as hilight pretty heavy if you don't want to lift your whole head.
