Just jumped over here from the beauty boards.

I live in a rural location, so my choice of salons is rather limited :I km hoping to get some advice to pass on to a "professional, as experience here tends to be limited....

I've had several different hair colours over the years. My natural base is probably a 6/7. I'm sick of the red tones in the lengths of my hair caused by the fading of dye. I've until around 3 months ago been dying it with medium/ash brown perm dyes, and using non perm washin/out to balance my roots & ends....this has been a good solution, as the non perm dont fade to red but needs to be done so bloomin often, and I'm having a baby in the next couple of weeks and need a low maintenance option. I currently have dodgy two tone hair where my roots are natural, blending into my red tinged ends!!!

When I've been to hair dressers locally, their solution is to use an ash base, but lo and behold a few washes down the line, the brassy tones are back!!!

:(

How do I get rid of these dodgy ends? Or is growing the colour out my only option???

You need to not go lighter than your natural colour and stick so semi. Send pictures of your hair

Problem is that they are using a permanent colour. It lifts before it deposits and when the tone washes out you are left with the warmth from the lift.

Another big part is aftercare. Are you using the shampoo and conditioner recommend by the stylist? Are you washing your hair in bath water (I have clients that admit to doing this *!!)

Go to a salon which carries dia light by L'Oréal. Ask them to use a deposit only colour with an ash base and buy the product they recommend

How long would a deposit only colour tend to last?

Usually longer than a permanent in cases like yours

Bath water? Shower water? What's the difference?

Eeww!! Really? Laying back in the water you have washed your body in, or pouring the water over your head using a jug, it will be full of bits of skin, hair, bubble bath, shower gel..

I use redken and pureology and wash my body after my hair lol. I also have highlights and do not experience colour fade. I was talking about my hair specifically.

You should have specified 'bubble bath' and 'shower gel' will promote colour fade not 'bath water' I don't use anything like that in my bath which is why I got confused.

So, I finally got round to calling a few local salons.....when I asked for a deposit only colour, they didn't really know what I was on about...

It's not inspiring me! I'm off to my local loreal salon tomorrow....but bet that within a week my hair is throwing off a crazy reddish brown rather than the colour I'd like :(
