Hi, I have a client who I have seen twice. When I first did her hair it had been heavily highlighted. She wanted full head darker. I took it to a 5 went well and the next time she wanted to go darker so I did a warm 4. Lovely .Until tonight she tells me she wanted to go back to her natural base colour So she has put a shop colour remover on which sent it ginger so she immediately put a colour on and of course its gone really dark again. I have yet to see her. She says condition still good. Anybody had a similar scenario? Usually I would go lots of fine highlights route but I am aware of the amount of bleach under everything. She has long hair which I know she will not be happy to cut.

I would use a colour remover just so there's no damage, and then when you re apply the colour, use a colour 1-2 shades lighter than your target shade with 6%

The colour remover partially did it’s job but unfortunately, as she isn’t trained, she didn’t understand how to use it properly and panicked when she didn’t get the result she was expecting.
You haven’t said what level she wants to be?

A colour remover is ideal when someone has been reapplying dark tints. I’d definitely choose this route over bleach as bleach would leave it very patchy. Depending on what she’s looking for, after using the colour reducer, either apply a low vol bleach mix to lift it a little further or apply a Demi to neutralise the ‘ginger’.

If you’re not confident with colour removers, read the sticky thread at the top of this forum for further info.

Thank you she wants to be around a 6 I think. I have yet to see her. Not really used colour remover, in all these years of hairdressing, before so wasn't sure of possible condition damage. She has used Colourless and L'Oréal Excellence herself.

Thank you, is there a remover you would recommend?

Colour reducers don’t cause damage as they’re not bleach based.

I have used and love affinage eraser!
But have also heard zalon is good too? But I've never used it myself.

Thank you, I have spoken to her and had advised her to do the anti dandruff shampoo trick which has brought it back to orange. So I am going to correct it. Do you think I still need to do the two shades lighter than required demi. She is wanting something about a 6.I don't expect she will be messing with her colour again bless her.

Test test test. Test her, test the hair and get it in writing. Tell her how much it will cost and completely brake it all down and get her to understand. If it goes wrong, your covered!

If you're just going to re colour over the orange to neutralise then no you'll need the depth of the base you're working on but if you're still going to do a colour remover then yes

Thanks, From what she has said I don't think we will need anymore colour remover as head and shoulders taken it back to orange.

Oh yes, definitely. I will do a before and after photo too.

You should be ok but test a piece with some neat peroxide/developer and see if any of the original colour molecules re-oxidise. It’s usual to apply a Demi 1-2 levels higher than target colour when re-colouring after using a colour reducer due to the prescience of a few old permanent molecules. You’re going to need something blue based to neutralise the orange. Some /1 tints are green based.

I was thinking ColourTouch 789? Haven't got a CT shade chart to hand but off to Wholesalers soon. She is wanting a natural looking 6.

All went well treated it and I have one happy, non orange lady x Thanks everyone for your expertise x
