I have been colouring my hair for years and flit between a 3N and 4N but the supermarket shampoo I use is stripping the colour and turning it reddish/ginger. Does anyone know what the ingredient is in the shampoo that strips the colour so I know what to avoid when buying?

I don't know the chemical but most supermarket shampoos will strip colour, head and shoulders being the worst! If you can, get a shampoo from your hairdresser their specially formulated to maintain your colour, supermarket and chemist brands "say" their for colour but their not formulated like a salon shampoo is, the price maybe a little higher but you'll use less because it's better quality and your colour will stay beautiful :)

Any salon with a big retail selection can get you on the right track & I don't know about your local but in Canada I have noticed drug store brands have gone up in price to about 8$ average/product! Good lower end but still way better than DS products can go for around 15$-30$/liter! not much difference price wise!.....Professional products are always guaranteed as well it always says so on the packaging.

If you try out a pro brand & do not like it, you can return it with in reasonable time of purchase, for full refund. The salon gets their cost back from the manufactures/wholesalers.

so make sure if iffy on spending the extra cash to ask of their return policy for extra assurance!

Thanks both. I did a bit of research on this and it seems it is the sulfate ingredients that strip the colour. I spent hours yesterday looking at shampoos in my local beauty wholesalers and they ALL contain this ingredient the same as the supermarket brands. Burts Bees do a sulphate and paraben-free shampoo so I'm going to give that a whirl once I've dyed my hair
