Hi ladies,

I'm not a pro, my mum used to be more than 20 yrs ago so I'm planning for her to colour my hair BUT she hasn't kept on top of things as took on a different career so she usually just cuts all the family hair.

My hair is very dark brown with greys at the front (we grey early in my family my mum is 46 & completely grey).

Now I want a different colour to go with my 50s look, pin up style.

My hair is very fine and I don't have a lot of it, about shoulder length.

I dream about proper bright red, or redhead orangey red, or silver or pastel colours like lilac, etc.

Realistically what can I do & what do you recommend?

This is me so you can see my skin tone & natural ingredients ;-P

TIA xxx

The only thing we can tell you is to visit a reputable salon, what you are asking is a big task and as your mum has been out of the game for so long we would not recommend her even attempting what you are after

Ok so after going to the wholesalers & asking the hairdresser there I've gone for the safest option... Red!

I bought loreal a majirel 6 for my greys, a 6,66 red and a red mix.

And just in case a poppy red crazy colour.

I probably won't get it to the right colour that I want but let's see.

I can't afford to be spending £40/£50 at a hairdresser. If i get advice & take stuff to my mum & update her then she should be fine.

Plus my mum would be disappointed if I went elsewhere :(

I would appreciate the advice.

My undertone is red. The ideal achievement would be the pic attached but I probably won't get there.ImageUploadedBySalonGeek1425721276.232344.jpg

Thank you.
Can you explain why?
Maybe suggest alternative, I'm gonna give stuff to my mum & tell her what peeps suggested.

I only have a few greys at the front.

I got a 30 volume cream peroxide I forgot to say. I can go change stuff if no good. Xx

Thanks so much in advance x

My mum is a professional she used to work in salons but now has carpal tunnel so had to do something else.

I understand that your mum is a professional but it is the rules of the site. We can't give professional advice to non-pros. Try your nearest college/training academy, they welcome models to practice on and it's much cheaper. Probably not much difference than what you would spend buying the products yourself. We can't see your hair or test it for incompatibility etc and it would be irresponsible to offer DIY advice. If your mum is unable to do it you are best off getting a professional or student guided/supervised by a trainer to do it.

Surely your mother knows how to remove colour? I understand shes been put of it a while but even so :/...

Don't worry ladies I didn't ask my mum about it I wanted to take all the right stuff as in best brand & colour & whatever advice from whoever in experienced in colour.

I have just arrived at her house & she's done a test on my hair & is lightening my hair to colour it the specific colour I want.

I was asking for your opinion as I value this website & the ladies on here as I have helped & have been helped in the other sections.

I didn't think I was gonna get blanks because I am not personally a hairdresser.

But when I arrived here there were no issues at all.

Thanks to those who responded & have a nice weekend. Xxx

We're not being rude its just if we go telling people how to do their hair the results could be disastrous. Hair is a complex thing. Hope your mom sorts it out for you

Yes I understand but I wasn't asking how to do it. I was asking recommendations for colours & brands so I could buy the stuff & take it to my mum.

What I wanted to know was if it was achievable, no point buying stuff & then wasting my money if you know what I mean.

But it's fine no worries, I bought what I thought with advice from hairdresser there and when I got here my mum did a test and is busy lightening my hair to get the red I want when colour is put on top. I don't quite get everything she explained but as long as my hair is ok and I get as similar red as possible (with my hair) then it's all good.

I'm all chilled no probs! I was just honest in asking the question as I just thought people would come saying something like... For that red maybe you should buy this brand this colour etc... She will probably have to lighten it first etc.

When I called my mum she told me what volume to buy. But colours she had no clue unless she actually went.
She has no clue which brands best etc and there is quite a selection!

Hairdresser lady recommended the Loreal in the wholesalers.

It is reputable, so I thought why not!

So it's cool it all got sorted in the end ;)

Now let's hope my hair comes out red! 😂😂😂

It does look fab. Now comes the task of maintaining it, my hair is deep red and goes rusty if I just leave it lol.
