Hello. I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to give me a bit of advice. I'm in my twenties and the year before last I was diagnosed with cancer and had to have chemotherapy and lost all my hair. I had really long blonde hair and went to a salon roughly every 3 months to get highlights done. My roots didn't bother me too much as my natural hair was fairly light so it didn't look too bad when they started growing out. I have now managed to grow my hair back as long as my ears and went to the hairdresser last month for the first time in years to have it coloured. I have realised that my hair that has grown back must be a lot darker as my roots now look terrible a month after I had the highlights done. I hate it! It would cost me a fortune to go to the salon every single month now to get the roots done, so i'm thinking about doing it myself at home. I'm after a medium shade of natural looking blonde and don't want anything too harsh that will ruin my new hair!

What i'm wondering is:
How do I know which kit to choose in Boots - are no ammonium ones the best!?
Is it likely to go orangey/brassy with one of these kits?
Do I just use a tiny bit of solution each month to redo the roots and not touch the rest of my hair? How often do I do my entire head?

Any help very much appreciated. Thanks very much xx

hello!
Unfortunately we can recommend home products.. however have u tried asking the salon about some lowlights in with the blonde :)? i reckon that would look beautiful and the regrowth doesnt look as harsh :) xx

ACongratulations! I know what a fight you have been through, and you have my respect and admiration.

Don't you think you deserve to have your hard won hair treated by a professional who realy knows what they are doing?

Could you consult with your colorist about how to best anccentuate your lovely, natural hair that is growing out of your head with a treatment that would be both more beautiful and unique than highlights and would require less maintenance?

Please don't buy a highlighting kit from boots. You most likely will ruin your hair, and spend more money in the long run.

If you don't think your current stylist would be open to discussing this with you, find another stylist!

No one on here can help you dtermine which over the counter product is best because we never use them.

We wouldn't even consider it!

Fact is, you will never get a salon quality lighter blonde colour from a box dye.

When your hair is lightened at the salon, they will mix the correct level of peroxide and lightener to lift it to the right shade. A box dye is just a generic formula so isn't likely to suit many people realistically.

If money is a problem, Bristol City College has 3 hairdressing training salons dotted around the city centre you could try. Book yourself highlights with a level 3 group rather than a level 2. It won't cost much more than a box dye and you're more likely to get a better result that way.

Thanks for your help everyone. Much appreciated! Thanks for taking your time to reply :) xx
