I gotta moan here. A lady who is a friend of a friend of a client of mine called me today. Her hair is a base 4-5 and very thick. She colours it with a boots product to cover the few greys she has. She is very dark in looks. She asks me today - "How much for blonde highlights?". I ask her how blonde. She wants to look all over blonde. I ask her what product she has been using on her hair and she says she can't remember uses a different one every time. She then says can I do at her home as she can't get to my house where I have a small salon built in my garage.

I turned down the business. Am I mad?

No, you clearly had a bad feel about this, and I don't blame you. Think you did the right thing.

You did the right thing. Definitely not mad.

I would never do a full head blonde tint or bleach on anyone with a natural base of 4
I would only think about it if they were older and had at least 40% white hair.

However there are exceptions in certain people with the right skin tones ect.

I don't think it is wrong if the client wants to go completely blond. My sister who is around a 4-5 went blond a few years ago but all over. It looks good. She does the roots every four weeks and there is an all over good even blond colour.

What disturbs me is the blond highlights in dark hair (or stripes if done badly which they too often are). It looks awful and needs redoing too often and most of this type of client want this type of stuff on the cheap and don't really care that it looks ruddy awful. But as this person works in an office where I get a few of my clients from I don't want that sort of advert.

I am beginning to feel I'm getting too picky but quite frankly I don't need the heartache of seeing a knackered head of hair again this side of Christmas.

Plus this lady has home dyes layered all over the hair, I would of turned it down too, there are some things that are inmpossible to make look good! x

What a nightmare. There's nothing worse than doing hair u do not agree with. You did the right thing. Its easier saying no than trying to explain why her hair is melted off lol.

It always amazes me that the first thing that people ask is 'how much for ...', not 'is it possible to ...' or 'will you advise me about ...'. It's as if price is the most important factor. Of course, it has to be a consideration but I reckon that if a client has to put price first they're unlikely to carry on with the upkeep - and slap a home colour on ... <sigh>.

I think you did the right thing in refusing to do it.

That is a very good point, I think price is a deciding factor for most; well this is why they turn to home dyes!

You wouldn’t buy Tesco value and expect it to taste like finest!
