While filing my nails I noticed that my Cuticles could do with a bit of work and it got me wondering if I had been going about it the right way. So I decided to have a look on the internet to see how other people go about caring for theirs and I came across a few articles and blogs saying you should never use nippers or anything to cut the cuticle and that you should only ever push the cuticle back to stop yourself from getting any kind of infection. I always thought you are not supposed to cut the Eponychium as its live skin, whereas the Cuticle is dead skin. So I guess my question is.. is it ok to cut the Cuticle or should it just be pushed back?

Pushed back and removed from the nail plate with a product such as CND cuticle away, I swear by it! Never cut live skin Xx

Thanks Absolutebeautyx. I use a pusher but have never tried cuticle remover (normally just soak my hands in warm water first). I will Invest in a good cuticle remover and try it with that. xx

It's probably because people confuse terminology. Cuticle is dead skin cells that are pulled up on the nail plate as the nail grows which is why it is possible to have it covering a large portion of the nail plate, higher up than you would imagine. This is what is removed with a cuticle remover product.

The Eponychium is the fold of skin that surrounds the nail plate at the bottom where it grows. It is living tissue and has the purpose of protection and for these two purposes should never be cut. If you do cut it you risk allowing the risk of infection to increase, it will be sore (because it is living) and also it will grow back thicker than before each time in order to protect itself from the damage being caused by cutting it.

If you have a thickened Eponychium or you find it difficult to gently push it back, use Solar Oil at least twice a day and massage it in, gently encouraging it back each time and gradually it will start to shrink back over time.
