Hi
I was hoping to get some advice, I am trying to grow my hair and I have heard that if you get clip in extensions you can cut them while they are in your hair to blend with your hair more.

However I wanted to know does the hairdresser also cut off some real hair?

I went to the hairdressers and she cut 6 inches of layers when I only asked for a 1/2 an inch straight trim at the back and a little feathering at the front. I was in tears, however its done now... thinking of getting clip ins but I can't bear the thought of any more hair being cut of my own not even a tiny bit!

Hoping someone can shed some light!

Hi, Oh dear that really sucks,
Perhaps your best bet is to go to an experienced hairdresser who also specialises in fitting in hair extensions , then she/ he will know excatly what you mean,
also always ask for the extension hair to be cut slightly longer than what you have in mind .... because it always looks shorter once cut ....
and you can always get a little more taken off it a step at a time..... because if this is cut too short you will be very unhappy because as you know its not gonna grow back again so theres no room for mistakes with this ,
good luck  x minky

Hey oh no!!! I have a lot of friends/clients who wear clip ins-the trick is to get the colour matched exactly to your hair colour-in the store they should be able to take them out and hold them against the hair. Also make sure you buy enough to get them looking thick because if too thin then the joins between your layers and the extensions show. You may need more than one packet. Apply these rules 1.exact match of hair colour and 2. making sure you have ENOUGH hair extensions to add thickness to blend between the layers of your hair and the extensions. You should be able to get away with realy long ones that can be worn straight out of the packet, with out having any more off your hair. Hope this helps xxxxx

Hi,

If i were you i'd do as Minky says and go to a salon/stylist who regulary deal with extensions & have it cut longer rather than shorter.. They'll understand how they need to cut them so they blend in properly & don't look fake. Cutting them as if they are normal hair will result in them looking awful!

Personally what i do is have my extensions fitted & with clean hair go to the salon & get them to spray the hair with a water bottle & cut them like this..

This saves the worry of them damaging them in the back wash/drying stage

A good stylist used to extensions will know which is your hair & which is extensions- i have never had hair cut when i get my extensions cut- except for the bits i DO want trimmed!!

I have long hair (about an inch above my the back of my bra if that makes sense) with lots of layers through the top. When i got my clip-in extensions my hairdresser cut them while in my hair, but it was very minimal actual cutting, she basically just took the ends off so that it looked neat at the ends (not messy/wispy), then the ones that sat at the front she layered around my face - they look fab and blend in with my hair perfectly!

Having said that I know a few girls who haven't had theirs trimmed at all and they look fab! It depends how you want them to look I guess

Good luck with yours I'm sure you'll be fine X

Hi, sarahpoppy :) I understand what you mean about a long layering effect using more wefts..

but.... think Koskinas may have been talking about two seperate things,
I think she was saying how unhappy she was after her own natural hair had been cut off 6 inches too short at the hairdressers

and she was asking about getting some hair extension wefts
because she was unhappy that the hairdressers had cut far too much off her own natural hair,

this is what I thought she meant anyway  lol x

then I thought she was asking can weft extensions be trimmed a little whilst they are fitted in her hair but... without cutting into any of the natural hair,
as she is very scared of her own natural hair getting cut into again..

all I can say is I do this a lot! ...and it's absolutely fine,
but... I would also reccomend she seeks out an experienced hairdresser who also cuts and fits hair extensions because as Jane mentioned a good experienced extensionist can easily do this for her whilst the wefts are fitted in her hair ,

and it will help make it look nicley blended in with the natural hair (especially around the sides ) all this can be done without cutting into any of the natural hair at all

Thats what I thought Koskinas meant  but I could be wrong :smack: lolx

Thanks alot guys, you've answered my questions, great advice, I will seek out an experienced hair dresser that cuts extensions.
I'm slowly getting used to the hair cut now and it looks better then when I first got it cut, its more settled in.
