It's all about finding your USPs (unique selling points). For example, I'm training in gel and l&p in order to keep up with my local competition - all three salons do all three systems. However, I know for a fact that none of them do UV gel polish (which I hope to market to an extent as 'what Jordan wore in the Jungle', although could be a bit dodgy as she lives down the road!!!), or the '2 week' airbrushed nails, so I am looking at using them as my USPs once I set up shop.
If not many people in your area do gel, it could be an untapped market. You could offer initial discounts and see if you can win people over.
