Hey geeks

I'm in a bit of a Dilemma.
I work full time, and have opened my home salon from 2012.
I do evening & weekends for my nail salon, to build business.

I felt I wanted to drop a day at work, applied for it, got refused.
Now appealing against it, decision should be made by tomorrow.

This week a voluntary redundancy exit scheme was announced.
I've worked here for 13 years so I would get a ok package although I haven't worked it out yet. I absolutely hate my full time job, but I've been stuck in it only for the bills and supporting myself & kids. Pay and progression not great. Divorced in 2010, re-married in 2012, have no financial commitment as hubby covers all that. I only manage my direct debits, kids things, shopping etc.
But as I'm a very independent person I don't like asking anyone for anything, that's why I need my own income.

I'm going to apply to it, by April 2015 I need to decide if I'm going to take it or not. June 2015 would be my last month to work.

I'm thinking if I get my day off I have more time to concentrate n build my business more, which right now I get no time, I just manage to see my clients.

If I don't get it then I'm thinking of taking the package. But I don't know what else I want to do other than build my business. I don't want to travel. My work right now is 3 mins from my house, I go home for lunch, I get home at 5 and can see my first client at 5.30pm.
If I get a job that's far my business will suffer.

Confused, frustrated and really don't know what to do!!!

Update.
My employer refused me to have the Friday off.
Applying for the exit scheme to see if it's worth it.

Has anyone left their full time job to move onto another job and still carry on with their nail business?

I have no advice for you because I haven't been in this situation before but I wanted to wish you luck. Since you said you hate your current full time job leaving won't be a problem from an emotional point of view, if you are covered financially to look for another job then you should be ok. I wish I could help you more x

Certainly after 13 years you should get an OK package (though not overly generous these days).

What about going looking for a new job that's not full-time, even if it's a job that's "beneath" you in terms of your previous experience?

Once you really start looking there are plenty out there - I was looking this time last year and if you find all the jobsites online, etc etc and look regularly there are actually plenty.

For example I found a job that was adequate pay, not as far up the ladder as my previous jobs, but 25 hours/week and they were flexible about which days, PLUS it was a maternity-leave cover so was only commitment for a year. [Would have been ideal for me at the time but I didn't get it ;-) ]

Alternatively, if you man can support you, why not set yourself goals and a deadline to develop your business so it can support you, and if you find it impossible then look for another job e.g. in 6 months' time. I doubt any recruiter would look too askance at an extended holiday after redundancy with a package to live on.

I've been made redundant 3 times, took 3 months off deliberately of the first time, the 3rd time got a few £grand and started my self-employed life.

Thank you ladies for your advice.

Financially I'm ok, my hubby pays for the little mortgage we have and all household bills,he never had a mortgage before only after his divorce he's had to get one and he's stressed about paying it off.

But I don't want to burden him with my expenses, my children's expenses on top of everything he has. He's got 2 kids of his own which he supports.

I'm going to apply for the exit scheme to see what they are offering me.
I only have to decide by April so I have time to get a feel of the market re jobs.

I've got loads of experience but nothing in paper that's my down fall and these days employers want to see things on paper. I work in recruitment so I know how hard people are finding it looking for a job, that's what scares me that if graduates are struggling wat chance do I have.

It's a tough decision to make as right now on my wages I struggle to last till the end of the month. I want something that pays a bit more, but at the same time local to pursue my business.
