I have very dark brown hair with a few grey and white hairs sprinkled across my head. A few years ago, I went to a salon which put a Dark Ash Blonde colour through my hair. I'd like to find out what it was and whether I can do something similar now.

The result didn't noticeably lighten my dark brown hair, but the grey hair did pick it up, so it looked as though I'd had caramel highlights. Not all the white hair picked up the colour, but it blended in nicely.

The salon closed shortly after, so I can't ask them. I've asked other hairdressers since and they say all they can do is give me a permanent colour with foils over the top. Apart from the expense, I don't like the idea of all that chemical treatment when I'm told my hair is actually in nice condition.

Does anyone know what the colour might have been?

Any applied hair colour is a chemical process, whether it's foiled, full head colour or bleach to permanent - they are all chemicals,

By the sounds of it, your last stylist just gave you a full head colour that only touched the Grey. Which is. Waste of colour if it doesn't touch lift the rest of the hair.

The foiling process is no different but less colour applied, and only applied in a slice or weave pattern giving a totally natural look.

Any hairdresser can achieve the "caramel " highlights you require.

It might have been a demi permanent colour also known as a glossing. They can blend up to 50% or 70% of white hair depending on the brand.
