Hi All,

I've recently started my mobile business and unsure if I need to get a DPS check (old CRB check) if you are visiting peoples homes. Apparent as a self employed person you can only apply for a "basis" check.

As I am wanting to offer my services to residential care homes will this be required. I've also been told to work in care homes you need an "Enhanced" check and this can only be applied for by an employer.

Confusing can anyone advise.

Thanks

I think you'll find that as a mobile therapist (in general) you won't need a DBS check because you won't be directly working with children or vulnerable adults.

As a self employed person you cannot ask for a DBS certificate of your own criminal record or ask an exempted question of yourself. However, if you are working in a care home and they require you to have a check then they should be able to organise this for you. It would be an idea to subscribe to the update service though as this means anyone with your permission can check your Status ongoing and it will only cost £13 per year after the initial payment which I think is about £60 rather than £60 whenever a new home wants to see one - it is also good practice for employers to check the DBS regularly as in theory they are only as good as the day they were written as in the case of the old CRB.

I would also think that if basic services such as manicure, pedicure etc are taking place in a communal area then the check would not be required but again, that would be at the discretion of the home.

Thank you for your response i'll look into subscribing to the update service you mentioned
