Do you think neat foils are important?

I always keep my nice and neat.. I was taught this way and have just stuck to it, infact if I'm honest I take great pride in my foils lol I also think it's important for the sectioning etc and looks better to the client.
However, whenever I see 'celebrity' stylists foiling, they seem really messy and look awful! I know it's the end result of the colour that really matters but I can't help thinking they should look neater!!
Maybe it's just me being a tad obsessive!! :-D

Yes I think they should look neat and flat. The foils shouldn't look like you've just got them out the lunch box as it looks scruffy unprofessional and think of the damage it would do to your hair and even though I do foiling at a fast speed I still make sure that every foil is near to flat as I took it off the roll. I got one girl who couldn't get the knack of it and now she uses a small foil board to to prevent breakage to the hair plus she can take better pride in her work without getting flustered and impatient.

Glad I'm not the only one!! Hehe xx

It's one of my pet hates! I can't stand seeing untidy foils, I used to get so frustrated when I was training because I couldn't get them neat like the other stylists, I practiced every night for weeks on my mum with conditioner to get them right, bless her.
I can't see how the celeb stylists can get a good result with the way some of them put them in. Maybe the ones we see are just for the camera, who knows what's gone on behind the scenes?

That's what I always think.. Surely the colour must bleed? Lol or maybe we are just better than them ;-) haha!

Hi ladies,

I think celeb hairdressers get away with an awful lot!

I was reading an article the other day, that was saying does anyone ever really question a celeb stylist`s qualifications? and are they really that qualified?
on the question of foils, i bloody hate them! i remember being a junior years ago now mind, hehe!! and that was 1 of my main jobs, cutting the foils : (( bloody hated it! LOL!!

I now only use meches, i find them so much better, look better, and you can check development so much easier : )

No it doesn't bleed I use blue bleach as this doesn't swell like White bleach either. Also I don't take the entire width of the foil up with hair and I don't ever get the foils bleeding. There are 4 reasons why your foils will bleed.
1. Using the tint brush too close to the root,
2. Squeezing the foil too hard when folding.
3. Taking too wider slices of wider to slices of hair foil the foil width,
4. If your using a White bleach it tends to swell blue bleach doesn't.
My family run salons in Kensington and Mayfair and these clients pay hundreds of pounds to get there hair hilighted and if we got it wrong we didn't hear the end of it believe me lol.

I use meche, and am very "into" my highlighting. When I am forced to use foil they look messy. However I have never had either foil or meche bleed, and can still work right to the scalp with both.

Usually only L'Oreal hairdressers use meche and Wella afficianado's seem to use foil!!

If I was a client paying hundreds of pounds, I would at least like to think that the Colour Technician doing my foils was not sloppy in any aspect.. I just think it looks really unprofessional in my opinion..But hey who am I to argue? I'm the one making just enough to live on and the celebs are making a fortune!!
Maybe sloppy foiling is the way forward! :)

Is blue bleach formulated differently to the White? Xx

I was Wella trained lol and I do love my foil.. I seem to really struggle to get as close to the root with easimeche as I'm terrified of bleeding! Do you have any tips? X

Yes, the weaving technique is different for meche. The weave is done on the scalp and is shallow, think shallow and wide rather than all the way through the secton of hair. With meche you cannot weave halfway down the hair.

Place the meche at 90 degrees to the head tight to the scalp, and only seal the corners.

I can get a full head done in 45 mins and right to the scalp.

Yes the blue bleach doesn't leave brassy yellow tones nor does the bleach swell like White bleach. If I want slight tones I'd use the White but I tend to stick to the blue as it has a built in antiswell.

With reply to the OP yes I think neat tidy foils are important, for the above reasons people have already put. Simba what blue bleach do you use? xx

I am not a hairdresser but may I offer my opinion?

I have a beauty salon upstairs from the hairdressers and when I go down and walk through their salon I love seeing the neat symetrical foils all over the head .. it soothes my eyes to see order and discipline. Is that a bit weird lol.

Neat, neat, neat all the time! i'm a bit of a 'neat freak' anyway but i think nice neat foils always look more professional!x

Quick blue by loreal or Tigi .

Thank very much :) xx

I trained with meche but used wella, I tried with foil but I can't stand the feel of it - makes my fillings hurt!! Persianista - I would love to watch you doing your work - could you run a training day for geeks???

I always do neat meche (foils are not my favourite) and if I ever do foils they are neat and flat and tucked in - think it shows you are professional this way!
