Hi Geeks i wondered if anyone could tell me what this is or what has caused it? - pics attached

My friend came to me for nail enhancements yesterday and her thumb nail looked like this! i was pretty shocked to say the least as i havent seen her in ages.

She has always had a dark looking mark on her nail which appeared not to be on the surface but on the bed. she damaged her nail as a child and has always been left with a brownish mark. (i've known her eight years and shes always had it and it hasnt changed much if any over that time).

Last week she removed her polish to find that the nail was black, it wasnt sore but she didnt put any polish back on. over the next few days the nail appreared to crumble away. she insists she didnt bang it or hurt it. its obviously sore and tender now as new nail and skin have been exposed.

anyone have any ideas as to what this is and the best way to help cure it. shes been to her doctor for tests and there is no infection. i obviously didnt apply anything to this nail due to the condition of it. the rest of her nails were dry as she constantly wears polish but were all healthy, she hasnt had enhancements for years.

sorry if pics are a little dark and fuzzy, it took me ages to try and up load them as they were to big.

Just went to get my scratch magazine and it has dissapeared, do you read it? If so in their latest issue they had a four page article with nail problems like this, describing what they are and how to cure them. If you don't read it maybe ask around, someone's bound to have it, and this article was really handy. Sorry im not much of a help! :( x

thanks i do get scratch, i'll have a look.

I don't think you need to be looking an any magazine or book. You should be strongly suggesting to your friend that she goes to the doctor asap!

She's already been to the doctors and had tests, scratch magazine is a nail magazine with an article about these things, it's not exactly gossip it's factual. :)

I agree. I was a hospital corpsman in the Navy, and that looks gangrenous to me.. due to injury or lack of circulation, or whatever, it needs treatment quickly.

My friend's nail went like that after he had trapped it in a taxi door after a rather rowdy birthday night out.

As Mum says though - docs are always the best port of call :D xx

With respect, I would take mum's advice and not try and diagnose this yourself... it could be anything and the only one that can give the correct answer is a Doctor.

I know what Scratch is! I write articles for it ;) This condition has gone far too far for ANY technician to diagnose or treat! She needs to go back to the doctors and ask to be referred to a specialist!

The first thing i would of suggested is doctors but if you read it, it says that she's already been to the doctors, had tests, and there is no infection, and all i can think of apart fron that is an article with pictures and the facts about what's happened. Otherwise i would of said doctors myself :)

I wasn't having a go at you

I'd love to know what it is too and it's fine to look at pictures of diseases and disorders (I do it all the time) but we still can't tell the client what we think it may be, as chances are, we'd have it completely wrong and will do more harm than good by guessing.

I'm sure she has to wait for more test results from the Doctor.

OMG that looks so sore! The doc's have to help her out. They cant just go ah well, no infection NEXT! She could maybe see a nail speciailist or something!

She did go to her doctor, he took a sample and sent it away for testing it came back with no cause for concern. She said her doctor didn't seem to bothered by it. No antibiotics or advice given. Just told if it gets worse to go back and see him. Just wondered as he was didn't have any useful advise if anyone on here had ever seen anything similar. She says its not sore its just end where the new nail and skin is that tender.

Considering im only 15 i thought this was a good idea as the doctors said there was no infection. But there you go, i learn a little more about beauty everyday, can't wait to go to college! Haha :) x

I'm aware that this is one for doctors and I am in no way attempting to diagnosis its more a curiosity thing. I'd love to know what it is.

May I make a suggestion then, seeing as you are 15 and have no qualifications as yet, maybe hold off on giving advice on something you are not trained or experienced in doing.
This is a professional forum for professionals.
Until you have been to college and studied and taken your exams you are not really qualified to be giving out advice.
Dont take this the wrong way but you seem like you have the passion just not the knowledge to be answering questions that can affect someones health or livliehood.
You have replied to other questions as if you are already trained and working in the industry yet you state on your profile that you are a saturday girl but that you dont do any treatments.
How can you give you advice if you yourself dont do these treatments.

When you have been to college and studied and passed your exams then you can give out advice but I would hold off until then. With your passion you should go far in this industry as long as you can take constuctive cristism and advice in the manner that it is meant.
When Mum aka The Marion Newman told you not be give advice of looking in a magazine for the answer you got a little defensive, there was no need to be.
So as I said please don't take this the wrong way as I dont mean it nastily, its just as a non professional you shouldn't really be giving advice to professionals. Good luck at college.

Do let us know if you find out.

I still can't believe the doctor isn't bothered about it! Jeezo.

I know I was really surprised when she said she had been to see her doctor and nnothing seemed to be done. I have never seen anything like it. I told her to go back and see him but she was obviously coming to me to see if I had an answer for her as I haven't done her nails in years.
