Hi geeks, now we have this new forum I don't feel out of place asking for beauty advice on a nail site.Anyway, you all gave me advice a while back about which courses you have done to go with your nail skills, so I did a bit of research into what I could do.
Yesterday I started City and Guilds Cosmetic Makeup, which is a year long, part time and covers a vast amount of subjects including facials, makeup and eyelash/ brow tinting. (Not abandoning my love for nails- just adding some skills) I have studied through City and Guilds before and know that I need to top up skills that I learnt from previous courses but did consider them to be good foundations and helped me discover which direction to go in.
I would like to know if any of you have studied on this course? What did you like about it, what didn't you like about it, have you been able to use what you learnt since and in what capacity?
Thanks for your help again geeks:hug:

I started on this course but was then furtunate to convert across to the nvq 2 course which covers more subjects.

It depends what you want out of the course.

Unless it has changed since my day you need to be aware that this does not cover facial massage (which is required by alot of product providers) and doesnt cover waxing or manis or pedis (you may already have these) which are the main income earners for salon work.

Like i said it depends what you want out of it!

I did it and was very disappointed. For a start the college prospectus said it covers facials and is Oey rightly points out it doesn't. then we didn't focus on the makeup at all, just ruddy tinting and perming. we were told it was suich an intense course that we would have to read up about the makeup at home!!! So the course in theory is great, but the one I went on was very badly organised and my certificate is still in its envelope as it has no worth to me.

I did cosmetic make up as part of the nvq level 2, a year sounds like a long time for this course. my level 2 was under a year and it covered Make Up, Facials, Waxing, Tinting, Manicure, Pedicure and few other bits - there were 9 modules which made up the nvq when i did it, not sure if its changed since then though!!

Jenn mine ran from 36 weeks (I think ... it seemed longer) on A Tuesday evening from 6.15 to 8.45, so only 2.5 hours each week, and the last 8 weeks or so were assessments only.

oh i see how it would take a year if jellybelly's course is only for a few hours each week - thanks sass!!

Yes it is part-time. We go to the college one evening a week and do the rest of the work at home along with practising, revision and portfolios. It seems on paper to be covering most of the subjects you have all mentioned apart from manicure and pedicure-I've done the initial nail qualifications already so that isn't a problem. I know that my Artificial nails course was lacking in areas so am having to convert to other training. I am just concerned that after a year- albeit part time I am going to have to do the same thing. I did think it strange though when the tutor said that despite it being a makeup course we would barely cover that subject due to time constraints! She kept emphasising time being a problem then threw a load of homework at us, which I am breaking from now by nipping in here.

hi jellybelly

i was due to start this course last wednesday, but only 2 other girls and me enrolled so it was cancelled  let me know how it goes for you, as they are hoping to run it in january so your opinions would be great xx

Looks like we are taking the same pathway Boop, I'll let you know how it goes as I'm having mixed views from the first weeks' session, though I am not a quitter and will see it out till the end. We are due to have 10 on our course though one was on holiday and you have to allow for initial drop outs. It seems very popular in our area and is such a shame for you that your course cancelled- I hate it when that happens, I've had 4 different courses cancel on me for various subjects and it is so disheartening.
