Has anyone just watched extreme makeover on Really? There was a woman on and she had shoulder length hair.... It was afro-carribean hair and this hairdresser was trying to add 'volume'. He literally took slices as you would with foils and every other slice, he was cutting the hair down to her root leaving about an inch of hair!!! And with the remaining hair, he was cutting out more hair to the root..... Has anyone actually ever done this?! I was shocked when I saw it!!!

I watched it too! I'm thinking they disguised a lot with the styling. Wonder what it looked like when tried to do it herself!

I cringed when he sliced that first bit off!! It did look good when it was done but as you say, can't imagine it looking the same if she did it herself.... She would have those bits sticking up!

I have seen this done on caucasian hair too. Idea is that the inch long hair holds up the longer hair.

Really? I was just thinking that if it was done to my hair it would be so visible!! Don't know how they do it!

Yeah I think it helps to make hair look thicker at the roots, but he was taking quite a bit off so I reckon the ends would be pretty wispy looking. They should do a 'before' and 'after' and a 'the day after that, when she styled it herself'

Diddn't see that programme, but many moons ago in my training in hairdressing (never took it up) we watched a video on this. A haidresser specially trained in afro-caribbean hair used the thinning scissors in the same way you described. He was saying that if you don't thin out the hair of some black people, you have absolutely no chance of styling it, as it is too thick to manage. I thought it was mad at the time, but when the video ended and you saw how this lady's hair turned out, it appeared he was right!
