Well I've got a children's facepainting party to do in a few weeks it will be my first one! I've been doing makeup for 15 years and I'm always doing adults fancy dress etc but I'm worried about doing kids thier so wriggly ! Any tips on keeping them still ? How long do you normally spend? I've given myself 5 mins. I ordereda glitter tattoo kit so some will have that . Any hints /tips about anything to do with doing a child's facepainting party! Greatly appreciated. Kids will be 4-6 years.

Hey! Childrens toy stores usualy have face painting manuals for kids faces with quick and easy ideas wev managed to pick up a few over the years for family parties fairly cheap, maybe have a search online might have some easy ideas in them and then the children could have a look and pick what they want?

Could you google some ideas, take a look through pics and pick out the ones you will feel comfortable doing, from simple designs to really big designs. Put them in a word document, and print a few copies. These little home made booklets can be handed to the children and tell them to pick the design they want!

Pick up some colourful pens in town, ask them to tick of their picture. It's little things like that that can get children involved and paying attention. Then it may be easier when it comes to getting them to sit still.

Also... If you pick the pictures, you know you will feel comfortable doing what ever they choose, where as if you buy shops from books there may be designs in there that you don't feel comfortable doing, and more than likely Some one will pick one of them designs that just too awkward to do on a child :)

What I would do is buy some cheap children's face paint kits from a store like pound land or pound stetcher, and then look on google images at face paint other people have done on children.

Hope I helped! x

Don't buy cheap paints, they drag on the kids skin and are a nightmare to work with. Get proper foam sponges and some brushes and decent quality paints (Grimas, Tag, Paradise, etc.)

I have a folder with boys designs and girls designs for the kids to pick from while they're waiting, if you leave it up to them to pick something off the top of your head you'll be there all day and some of your demands will be incredible (e.g. an icecream lol)

Have glitter for the girls, a towel to wipe your hands/ brushes on, baby wipes, a bag for used sponges and try to keep your table organised, it will help you keep on top of things as it can get a bit hectic.

Good luck :)

Ps kids tend to sit pretty still when they're being painted unless there's a lot of commotion going on around them so make sure you keep an orderly queue. YouTube have some good tutorials and books like Usborne 5 minute faces are a good starting point, the Wolfe brothers books are great too x

Def worth investing in decent paints. I use snazaroo as it's a well recognized brand to customers and ideal for kids. If you have an I phone/pod/pad or smart phone snazaroo do a free app you can download with pictures and step by step guides to basic kids designs.

In terms of them sitting still it's hard work especially if they are very young. I find that if you keep talking to them it's usually a good distraction and keep praising them for how well they are sitting still, even if they aren't the reverse psychology usually helps! Keep reminding them to sit still and look up etc whilst talking to them as they forget! Arm yourself with a bit of kids knowledge like tv programs, pop stars etc. Good luck and hth

Yeah I already have quite an extensive kit grimas snazaroo diamond fx screenface as I do do alot if adult stuff and I'm used to doing intricut designs it's just I'm used to people keeping still!! Lol. Ice got 6 designs each for boys and girls they can choose whitch one they want to be I'm confident in doing them all if they keep still!! Haha been practising on my 2 and it's a nightmare!! Thanks everyone x

Paint them on a high chair as they look down alot and you have to keep lifting their faces.

Get them done quick - 5 minutes is about as long as some kids can sit.

Don't have too many choices - they may want something that takes too long and will get bored.

Good luck
x

I've found that the older children sit really well and your age group 4-6 are a good age to understand what you want them to do.

Painting them in a higher chair is a good tip. You know what you're doing so you'll be great :)

Ps my kids never sit for me to practice on either but for anyone else they are angels lol! x

I'm the opposite used to dealing with kids in this type of environment but only just embarking on professional facepainting. You will be fine and you have experience on your side both in terms of your ability and the fact you have 2 kids of your own. Once you get started you will find out what works to get the job done!

I was painting my 4yr old earlier and she is a nightmare, so easily distracted and wriggly. She fell off the back of a high stool and got trapped between stool and wall! She was being so silly! Kids!!!!!

There is some great info posted here already.

Definitely have a few pages of designs they can pick from - but not too many. Popular designs in my experience are: butterflies, fairies, tigers, zombies, dragons. Maybe also the colours / logos of football teams? Or the olympic rings? Depending on the age of the kids and type of party / event.

Kids can usually sit for 5 minutes for face painting before they run out of patience. You could bring a small mirror to let them see what you're doing and keep them entertained. They also don't mind queuing for face painting as they all want to get it done and they like seeing what designs other kids are getting.

Definitely try to do most of the designs beforehand to make sure you can do them and to increase your speed.

Do you have any ideas for parents too? Some might like to get it done too!

Good luck with it.

God!! No!! I've got 2 hours to do 25 kids!! Parents can bugger off!!! Lol thanks everyone for your replys xxx

You'll actually get through it quicker than you think, 1 big tip is to remember that it's not adults make up that you're doing so don't be too pedantic, as then you find time running away with you. Have you got a helper? Someone to change your water, hand you wipes, organise the queue, etc. x

What is it with kids, they always act up for parents but sit perfectly for others! Hmmm or Grrrr!

I used to work as a manager for a large pub Chain that had soft play facilities. I managed the biggest and highest turnover softplay site (as well as highturnover pub). We used to hold 9+ 2hr kids parties every Sat & Sun plus some everyday in the week. We used to have a maximum number of 25 kids (though this did get exceeded). We had to get all the kids painted within 1hr because of the tight time frames (we would only need 1 or 2 girls to face paint).

My point is that it really is possible. DO NOT PANIC! Stressful as it maybe!

Hiya, I am a professional face painter and a member of the international Face painting association. Please make sure your insurance does cover this and looking at other artists photos as inspirations only as photos are copyrighted and owned by artists.

Make sure your posture is right, look after your back and shoulders. Children are small and they tend to look down or turn their face away suddenly!

I paint quite fast but it would be a push for me to paint 25 children full face. Small designs would be fine and like e others have suggested, a limited number of designs would help.

Good luck and have fun! :) you will enjoy it :) x

Hii sorry to dig up an old thread! Just curious how you all charge? Learning face and body painting in college and considering offering this at kids parties etc when I qualify. Do you have a set hourly rate? Charge per child? Never noticed it advetised at all where I am so dont have much to go off! Thanks in advance xx
