I was just thinking about how I don't have any irrational feels but then remembered...a fear of sharks being in swimming pools!

<humming JAWS theme> da dum da dum dadumdadumdaum:lol::lol::lol:

Seriously though, if someone shouted "shark" and I was in a pool I would grow some wings and fly out! It's especially unnerving in the pools with the waves where they have the grate along the end. I always imagined it was the cage to keep them in...and let them out!

lol weezie you had us going there...ahh you mean the safety pools that seperate the sea where the swimmers are allowed to swim in safety so that the big jellyfish & sharks don't attack you.. like the ones in Australia and miami florida ..my brother told me about them a while back.

No I mean a real pool (chlorine filled) with the grates that have the fake wave machines! I am that mad. It really freaks me out, I much prefer the one depth pools as you can see to the bottom, they have no murky depths <Shudders>

Strangely I'm not scared of sharks in the ocean! I won't go in the sea not for fear of sharks but fear of vomiting on salt water or standing on something sharp or bitey!

Gosh I have a lot of phobias come to think of it!

Wasps.I have never been stung and probably need to be so i can rationlise my fear.I was once quietly sitting on a crowded bus window seat when a wasp flew to my window and i leapt into the lap of the man sitting next to me and if i go to the pub and sit outside im constantly running around like a whirling dervish just a flail of arms.Thing is my method works ..i have never been stung wasp or bee and im 45

I used to think that about dogs...because i worked in boarding kennels..when i first started out...occasionally some dogs made me feel a bit aprehensive and nervous to go in cos they looked a bit dodgy lol and i used to think i needed to get bitten...get it over with lol........eventually one day...i did get bitten!....it made me realise even more why sometimes i felt a bit apprehensive!!.....so dont think you need to get stung ...you really dont! lol  keep wavin them arms about! I got stung by a wasp once and it bloody hurt!! hehe

I am so with you on this!!! i have had those very thoughts when being in a pool with grates on the bottom and especially wave machines...but as if theres gonna be a shark in there! lmao :green:

Hiya

I really do not like clowns... I cant look at them in the gum ball machines, I made my hubby take down his clowns pictures that his mum and dad gave him as a moving in present (why they thought he liked clowns I really dont know.. he has taste now lol)

I freeze if I see one or run as fast as I can to get away from them.

I believe my fear began when I was aged 6, was followed home by a man dressed as a clown with the weird shoes and red nose trying to talk to me and my sister.

My other fear is being sick!! sorry if you are reading this sat with a cuppa and a sandwich.. I just dont like being sick as I think that I will choke to death, I think this fear began after a heavy night on vodka and orange juice.. I think I left out the orange lol.

I am really afraid of fish.

I cannot eat any fish or seafood, I can't go in a fish shop, I can't look in tanks or ponds.

When Nailzoo posted a picture of a lobster he was going to cook for his New Years Eve dinner I nearly had the screaming abdabs. :Scared:

I have just been sat chatting to some people in my chat room after I had finished my radio show and we were talking about fears.

I was saying I have a fear (increasingly becoming irrational) of Midgets... and Identical Twins (only when I see them together, one of my friends is an identical twin, but I have never seen him with his brother!). I don't know why but these two kinds of people just scare me, totally!

I have no idea, and I have nothing against them, I am just scared.

One thing I do have an irrational fear of is DADDY LONG LEGS (Crane Fly?), the pointless flying giant spider thing that just randomly drops on you *shudders*

Anyway, whats yours?

Phobias are becoming increasingly prevelent these days. Some people are suffering extremely badly when they 'stack' their phobias. By stacking I mean that they have a number of phobias that can be triggered at the same time.

For example, if you saw two very small, identical looking daddy long legs' you would have three phobias stacked and your head would probably explode from the anxiety.

There are a number of things you can do to avoid this situation occurring:

1. Repeat three times, three times a day for 300 days: 'all daddy long legs are unique and come in a variety of sizes. i will never meet twins or midgets or lord forbid midget identical twins'

2. Avoid sleeping with identical twins, midgets or identical twins that are midgets. the shock when you wake up could kill you.

3. Wear a sign around your neck warning identical twins that you may act irrationally. Do the same on your ankles for the midgets.

Hope this helps.

I got stung by a wasp on a first date last year! Was extremely annoying and it is very hard to look demure and ladylike when there is a wasp down the back of your dress! My date and I did continue to go out for several months even after the screaming and him seeing rather more of me than I had intended, until I recently decided I no longer enjoyed coming second to his job and told him to get on his bike and take his nasty wasps with him! (We were in his neck of the woods when the incedent occurred and therefore that makes it his fault by default!) Lol! It really isn't as bad as you think its going to be being stung, just |I would reccomend avoiding it on first dates is my only advice! Lx:smack:

Mike,

This made me howl with laughter

However, as someone who subjected herself to a Psychology Degree, there is some fact in your statements.

Phobias can be treated with a therapy called "flooding". This basically means subjecting the person to their fear head on without them being able to get away.

For instance, if you have a fear of spiders, you will put the person in a small room with spiders (lets say in a tank) and have the person get very close to them without them being able to get away (i.e run out of the room or not being able to see the spiders).

You can only experience fear / hysteria up to a certain point, it can't get higher and once you've reached that point, it has to come down.

So, if your fear level goes up to 10, you can't get more scared than a 10. Now 10 might mean that you scream and shout, sit rocking in a corner crying your eyes out and calling for your mum, but you CAN'T get more scared than that.

Once you have faced your phobia, the anxiety comes down and you can face your fears in a more rational way.

It's fact and it works

For some reason I keep trying to overcome the fear but alas they are still weird/freaks/bizarre/dishonest/lying b*stards/can't cook/leave the seat up/think they are gorgeous when they clearly aren't....shall I go on?...
I shall continue though and combat this fear:lol:

I don't know a lot about it but I believe this is similar to CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) where you get flooded or pushed over threshold to reduce the anxiety.

It works for some and I tend to liken it to the Gillian McKeith method of slimming.

My interest is more around the NLP techniques which I liken to 'Gok Wang'. There are lots of things you can do to help people reduce the reaction to one appropriate for the circumstances (for example if you're on the edge of a cliff it is appropriate to be wary about falling, but not so scared that you fall).

From a personal perspective I'd go Gok every time as I'd probably get locked up for murdering Gillian McKeith
