It would save a hell of a lot of time on foundation courses. Just think, first attempts would win awards! No need for practise or further training, most of us would be ready to go after a couple of hours in our first class.

Maybe we simply don't care for styles that we're not accustomed to, but I really can't see much of a market for these shovels hereabouts.

I will probably get shot down for this, but it reminds me of people swooning over that daft <to me> picture by the artist Tracy Emin or whatever her name is. She was widely acclaimed for a pic of an unmade bed in a room strewn with *** ash! Renoir, Constable, Michaelangelo, Monet etc eat your heart out!

Yes, I think they are ugly...would I give them to a client if they specifically asked for this style?

ABSOLUTELY! (I might make a joke and ask her not to tell anyone she got them at our salon though:lol:)

I don't think this style is going to be 'big' in the UK so don't think the UK techs should be worrying about it tbh.

However, I believe it is our professional duty to ensure we are all capable and competent enough to satisfy any of our client's wishes and can carry out any 'style' service the client wishes regardless of our own personal likes and dislikes.

Hmm are you in central California?
I'm not sure what they're called. I've only heard of them as flared tips. You could try asking some beauty supply stores in your area. Maybe like CosmoProf?

They are originally ( now rebranded! ) called duck feet nails. And I love them. I must admit though I would rather sculpt. Everyone to their own liking.

What are they rebranded as Ugly Duck nails?

I'm late to the party but here is what I know about these type of tips. This "style" started in the Islands (Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, etc) and was originally brought to NY and CA. They seem to have taken off in CA in the past few years (and are still really popular amongst the youngish set in the Caribbean). Originally called Ducks Bills I think (?? - getting old memory failing or a purposeful blacking out of information).

Done usually with a tip put on backwards (ie. end reversed so that what you would normally affix to the nail plate is at the end, usually cut out). Then you build the shovel (I mean nail ah ha ha ha).

Yes they are, IMHO, ugly as hell but as someone else said, if someone came to me and wanted them (even after I tried to tactfully dissuade them ha ha) I'd do it. With a grin on my face whilst I cringed inside. Luckily, hardly any chance of that happening here in NZ (Thank You Oh Higher Power!).

And thats all I gotta say about that.

:)

Thanks, but no matter how well the nails are done ... they offend me in every way.

Maybe you also like those horrible duck shoes (crocs) that also look vile on every living female over the age of 3 .. someone has convinced many that they also look cool .. they also offend me in every way. No one, not even you, darling, will ever convince me that ugly is cool or beautiful.

I'd still do them for anyone whose taste is up their bum and who asked me to do them ... I am in business after all. But lord knows I wouldn't like them even if the good lord told me they were nice. They offend.

See, that's why we love you Geeg :lol::lol:

lol .... Fiona !!! You KNOW I'd slit my throat before I turned a client away!!

Just because I think they are vile doesn't mean I'm going to give the business to someone else. Noooooooooooooooooooo way.

And I admire you for that!!!

As stated in my earlier post I don't think I would do them, I would refuse, but in all honesty I have never ever seen a set in this country or had a client ask for them, so I can say that without risking sending business away:green:.

Maybe I would change my mind if it got really popular, but untill then...

I would not do them, for several reasons.

First and foremost, I wouldn't want that type of style associated with me or my business.

Second, that type of nail would be easier to break and catch on things which increase chances of breakages. The nails are not naturally shaped that way, and everyone knows what can happen with a bad break and the damage that can be done.

You can't go home with your clients and you can't be their 'nail guardian angel' either. Clients take their chances with breakages with all kinds of nail lengths and shapes that they are not used to and that is their lookout frankly.

As for your first comment, there is another side to that (the side I always think of being a 'glass is half FULL' type of person instead of a 'glass is half EMPTY type person :green:)... A person who requests this kind of nail shape undoubtedly has and mixes with friends who also would like the same on their nails which is all a potential increase of business to me.

I hate the flare shape, I think its vile etc etc but I'd still do the best-looking-horrible-ones around if someone or many someones wanted it. That's business and that's what I'm running and I don't think doing this shape would affect it or me, as I doubt whether my other clients would even mix in the same company as the girls who wear this stuff. If they saw them, they'd say, "You got those done by Gigi?? Yeah right, pull the other one." Then we'd have a good laugh about it later.

Lol my mother owns them!:lol: But no, I wouldn't mind who came to me and asked for what, I would advise them against something or even refuse to do it if it would be in anyway damaging or unsuitable for them. But I accept peoples tastes as their own and if I don't like it, oh well I don't have to wear it. But its nice that we have such a variety of techs out there that like such different things.
I don't get why they go as far to offend you though.

Ugliness offends me. The Flared shape is all wrong in every way to what I see as beautiful. To me beautiful is feminine, sleek, elegant, a shape appropriate to the hand and length of the fingers, balance and beauty. To me a flared nail tip has none of these criteria.

Oh ok.

ha ha ha,

i love reading your replies geeg, you make me laugh, i don't like em but would def do them if i was asked, never know we might all be doing them if they come over here. the lady who was doing them, her nails were nails.
janice x

Yeh I am indifferent about them I never get asked about them, dont think any one where I live would know what they are and I sure as hell aint about to tell them lol!!! However if asked to do them of cource I would. I was a hairdresser before I was a nail tech and still am. As long as the end result will not damage the hair or is unachievable I will do it, wether its stripy, loud tarty what ever if the client wants it and you dont give it they will go elswere. Thats my preference, with hair and same with nails, could be wrong though xxxxx

Omg Gigi just been reading this post on my phone in bed and have just woken hubby up laughing so hard to your replies. Please, please dont change this is why I love you hahahaha.
My opinion is the same as many on these ghastly ducks ass nails but if asked to do them I think I would really have to restrain myself on the finishing oh and make the client sign a disclaimer to not mention my name if anyone asks who did them. Lol
To each their own as they say.
