So I’ve recently been doing family and friends nails as I’m starting my new apprenticeship in a salon..

My mother has had her nails done in a salon before, and she’s had tips with gel.. and her fingers swelled up and got itchy and red. I’m not sure if it was from the gel, or the acrylic.. and obviously I want to test a set of nails on her..

Does anyone know how I can do a test to see if my gel and/or acrylic products react to her? And would it be safe to do this?

I would suggest she goes to the doctor and have a proper allergy test conducted. It will most likely be a particular ingredient she is allergic to, and without knowing which one, you wouldn't know what products will be safe to use.

Is this something that would happen every time she regularly had nails done? If so, I would have at a guess that the salon she was going to was overexposing her either with the acrylic monomer but touching the skin with their brush all the time, or rubbing the gel inhibition layer back onto the skin. If she was going regularly, she could have developed this over exposure over time. Unfortunately, once you have it, you tend to have it forever...

Have you done nails on her yourself yet? depending on the reaction, some people can be managed by being super careful around the skin and others, it's best to avoid the irritant.

She had them done once at a salon and never wanted them again because of this reaction. She wears stick on express nails all the time.. so she’s been fine with certain glue she uses so I couldn’t of course use her glue with tips but then I would need to test acrylic or the gel in case it wasn’t the glue causing a reaction if you understand what I mean

In many cases, it takes repeated exposure to a particular substance for a reaction to develop into something that causes itching around the finger tips. However, as her fingers swelled after just ONE set of enhancements, I’d be extremely cautious about using any nail enhancement products on her.

Okay that’s good information to know. thank you very much :)

If your mum is fine with glue on nails, she might be okay with the resin dip nails
