Hi,

I'm reasonably new to gel extensions. I have been doing gel polish over the natural nail for a year now and have never had a problem. Nails stay on for 4 weeks no problem. However when I am doing gel extension I am having problems with nails coming off. The whole nail comes off from tip to cuticle. I am doing the exact same prep and using the same brand of gel. Could it be the glue that I am sticking the tip down with? Thanks

Are you trained in gel?

Gel polish is not the same as gel.

I'm aware. When I say I'm using the same brand of gel I mean I'm using a bellissima builder gel for the extensions where I use bellisma gel polishes for gel overlays on natural nail

It sounds like you are not buffing the nail properly if it's coming off in one piece.

Describe us you full procedure and we'll try to help

Oh ok your initial post didn't say that you only mentioned the gel polish.
Perhaps your arch is not high enough maybe ? Or the belisima gel is not adhearing correctly if you say the gel polish is adhearing to your natural nail and then lasting ages while this isn't so the culprit must be the builder gel by process of elimination, try making it thicker maybe on the stress points or if your tip or extension is too long and the nail pops off .

Thanks so much for your response. The whole nail coming off had only happened once. More often they break about half way. I will attach pictures so you can see. My procedure is as follows:

Push back cuticle and remove all skin from nail plate
Shape nail to fit tip and remove length of natural nail
Buff nail plate to remove shine (I try not to do this too much to avoid making nails weak and damaged)
Size up and glue down tips
Cut tips to size and blend (making sure nail plate and whole tip are buffed to allow builder gel to adhere)
Apply gel from cuticle to tip and build apex (curing for 1 minute)
Then onto the gel polish for colour

I'm using a white buff block to buff nails. Is this grainy enough?

I will also attach pictures of my nails as I am starting to wonder if I am building my apex to high in the nail. Should it be further into the middle?

Personally I would says it prob too long of you doing practical things round the house with your hands.
I have clients whose nails are super long and she never breaks a nail however she has adjusted the way she does a lot of house chores.

On a couple of them it seems as though you haven't built the apex correctly and it seems a little flat. That and your stress points or your sides need some work.

You should probably do more than one layer of builder gel. Also the apex is slightly too far back toward the cuticle area and not built up enough on some nails. I see something going on at the sidewalls but not sure if it's messy application or sides that need to be straightened and brought in.
