Hi guys!! Need some help..
Doing client's GEL nails the other day, and found out that she suffered from a heat sensation from the U.V lamp and when buffing her nails seemed sensitive.I made sure the gel was not applied too thick and gel was not in contact with cuticles and sidewalls.

Got any ideas on what the problem was!?

Need help.. Big problem..!

she may have thin nail plates.

if this is the case maybe gel is not for her,

if she can feel sensation when you are shaping the product maybe you havent applied it thick enough.

If you only do gel, maybe you should apply a few thin layers of gel (like polish) before you build.

What lamp are you using? Not authority on this so this may be so wrong, but, could the wattage of the bulb be too high??

was it on every finger? I know when i sometime do gel on myself, sometimes I may feel a bit of heat sensation. this was more when i first started out in nails tho, because we had to practice on each other, and my first partner at college was a bit dangerous with a nail file!!!

Has she had extensions before? Are her nail beds normally thin and brittle, or is it because she has had nail extension by someone else before and they have damaged the nail plate?

Did the nails appear to be thin when you assesed them at the beginning of the treatment?

well this reply seems to be could it bes and has she and what ifs!

hey geeks, got any clues?

well hope my semi answer/question, has helped a bit, if not, well hey nice talking to you hun!:D

Sounds like she is either suffering damage to her nail plates from previously applied enhancements or that she has naturally thin and sensitive nail plates? Remember reading previous posts about this; try a search to see what you can find. Sorry this doesn't help much!

Hi Rach

Has she recently had her nails done by someone else? If so, maybe they overdid the prep and thinned out her nail plate too much - or they may have removed them without proper care. A thin nail plate or gel applied too thickly is what would normally cause a heat sensation in the lamp but as you say you didn't apply the gel too thick I'd guess it's the thin nail plate problem.

I take it she managed to withstand the time in the lamp though - as long as her enhancements are now done professionally then I wouldn't think this problem would happen again - her nails should begin to grow back thicker and less sensitive.

Thanx guys for all your help and quick replies.

Yes, she had gel done by another technician before me and had the same problem, although she did have natural tips and had them buffed so I applied french tips so not to cause any more trauma!

My lamp is a 9watt and I've used a several times and had no probs, so I don't think its that.

She has the habbit that all us nail technicians dread (bitting her nails!) could this have anything to do with it?

I think next time I'll suggest acrylic!

i wouldnt have thought being a biter would be prob. but then again she may not just bite, she may run her teeth along the nail plate and as such peel flakes of nail off with her teeth. eguh!

yeah maybe to be safe suggest l&P, she may just be someone with very thin nail plates natural, who has a very low pain thresh hold!

well good luck what ever you decide to do hun!

Not sure if this helps, but I think some people are just more sensitive to the heat produced by a lot of enhancements as they cure. I did a client last night (gel) whose nails were really strong, never had enhancements before, and she commented on the heat, but some people don't notice it at all.

I found that if they do feel a heat sensation, get them to take their nails out of the lamp and just sit them in the 'glow' of the lamp until the sensation has gone, they can usually return their hands to the lamp without any discomfort once the initial stages of curing are complete.

Hi

When I was doing the rounds at one of the beauty shows trying to choose a gel system I had several trial nails done. With a couple of the non-soak of gels I had this 'heat pain' in my finger (I know the names but don't want to be slagging any product's off). My nails were in good condition but both times the technician buffed my nail plate (now that I'm a bit more experienced I can't believe that I let tham do that!). I was asked to take my hand out of the unit and press the pad of my finger on the desk. Sure enough the pain disappeared as quickly as it had come.
I am not suggesting that you have thinned the plate but if your client has had this done in the past elsewhere then perhaps this could be the problem.
As lucky bird suggests she may have added insult to injury by scraping her nail plate with her teeth.

Hi there

Have you tried contacting your trainer to see if she has any answers?

I'm wondering if I shall experience this on Monday on my Gel course as my nails have suffered since my l&p course and are a bit tender in places.

Some gels create a severe 'heat spike' some moderate and some very very little.

Different Gels differ!!

There is no need for a client to feel pain if you know your product and the type of heat it generates. Once you know that, then adjust the thickness of your layers of gel to accommodate the sensitivity of the client nails. If in doubt, always test on one first and then adjust for the others.
