Hi geeks :)

I'd just appreciate your opinions on this.. I have been hairdressing for about 6 years, have been in a couple of salons, mobile & now am a salon owner. I have always been a very confident hairdresser both theoretically and practically. In the last few months, I've been really assessing my work and I don't know if it's because I'm side tracked or too busy for my own good or because I'm always watching the staff and making sure they're doing alright.. But occasionally, I'm getting a couple of bleeding foils (and its always around the crown area for some reason - no where else) and its getting me frustrated. I have always wrapped my foils pretty tightly - applying the foil, folding it up twice, sliding the comb across to smooth and then folding in both sides to make a packet. But after watching Tabatha's Salon Takeover (my fave tv show!!), she's just said that you should leave the foil open at the sides to allow the oxygen to flow through it for the colour to breathe so then it doesnt bleed... Just wanted to ask who folds sides in & who doesn't.. Ha! Sorry, I'm just a perfectionist and it might not be a big deal to some people but I want to be better! Any theories welcome anyone?? Thank you :) Xx

Hi as a relatively new salon owner i can completely understand the fact that u are probably a little more rushed than usual , it happens when your trying to watch that everything is being done as it should be with the other stylist while taking care of your own clients lol... but as far as the foils if you havnt changed what foil you usually use or the colour this could either be down to folding the sides (i dont do this personally) or i would take heat as a factor??? usually this makes the colour swell more so causing bleeding.are u using new chairs? so the clients are in a slighly different position? my new salon is much warmer than the old one so we have had to take this into consideration and we got new chairs too so it took me a little while to get used to the clients being sat more upright. sounds like just little things but they can make a difference xx

Thanks for the reply hun, I have not even begin to think about any of that kind of stuff.. I was mobile for a couple years before the salon so I suppose I'm used to working on different chair heights etc. Heat could be a massive thing you know.. I can't believe I have overlooked that as a factor! I'm always complaining I'm boiling in the salon with all the dryers on and climazone and sometimes the pure amount of bodies bobbing round the salon lol! I think you're right, I am rushing and admittedly probably not 100% concentrating and fully focussed. I am going to kick my back side in Jan/Feb and get on some training courses aswell to reinspire me a bit. Thank you. Good luck with your new salon xx

Hey its a massive learning curve, sounds like your doing well though, wish u all the luck :) xx

It does sound like it could be the heat but I've had this problem in the past and recently attended a foil placement course to help me out! It could be the angle you're placing the foils? Or another thing I learned which is really good is when I started out we had the measurements on the side of the tube and quite often got into the bad habit of guessing the peroxide whereas now I weigh my tint and peroxide on scales so the measurements are exact and since I've done that I've had amazing results! also with bleach make sure it is a thick consistency and when first applying apply a bit away from root further down the foil and then apply to root with the edge of brush when your brush hasn't got so much product on it.

Hope this helps! It really helped me! :)

hiya one of the colour courses i done a few years ago and they also said about using sales and also the correct measurements for bleach which i do all the time now what they said i thought made real sence was if you were making acake do would added the mesurements or your cake wouldnt turn out right

WOW! see ive never heard of anyone measuring bleach??? im a stickler for measuring colours as i think i have learnt over the years u get better results of course but never bleach, i have always just gone with consistancy, how do u do it??????

I measure my bleach too!
Never use to till I moved to Australia and everyone did it in the salon and assured me that it made a difference to the overall lift and look, and boy were they right!
Also I stopped wasting so much bleach from guessing!
xox

well all the makes are diffrent i use Schwarzkopf Vario Blond blue bleach there is one scoop of powder two scoops peroxide or 1/2 a scoop powder to 1 scoop peroxide somtimes i use goodwell they are 1 scoop powder to 35mls peroxide you do get a cleaner more even result

sorry ment to say it does feel abit more runny at 1st but u do get use to it :)

Thanks guys.. I'm going to try that & weigh out my bleach by whatever my instructions say. I use Indola bleach. I always weigh my colours and I'm very particular with that.. I am angry at myself now that I've been so lazy! Thanks xx

As soon as i get back into the salon on Tue im gettin the team together to sort this one out, we waste so much bleach by not measuring, there in for a shock ha thanks Geeks xx

my foils i dont fold into little packets unless im doing a under coat i just fold once it helps save time and makes it easy enough to check the colour :)

Just reading this with interest, while on the subject of prob with bleach I tend to have my bleach for foils fairly thick to prevent bleeding but somtimes the bleach is patchy on the hair, is ths because my weave/section is too thick ? I have heard of some stylists brushing bleach onto the foil placing weave/section then bleach over the top ???

yeh ive had this problem with people with really thick hair too, putting colour on the foil first helps it seep through the thick hair and hold the foil in place too, i know it takes longer but thinner sections are easier, also if you hold the hair more upwards when placing the foil undernieth helps too, i got into the habbit of being lazi and holding the hair lower whilst trying to put the foil in, i didnt get nowhere near as close to the root  x

It does take more time to bleach the foil but supose it has to be done sometimes ! I changed quite sometime ago the way I put foils in, I now use the tail of my comb to put the foil in. gets nice and near to the root
I'm hoping someone might give me a majical answer to the patchy prob ! x

are you weving too thick ? is your product too thick ? are you really working it in if they are thick weaves / sections ? the only times i have had it patchy is when my weaving has been too thcik and i havent worked the bleach in enough if you go to

Blue powdered bleaches don't seem to swell, try using it and trying not going so close with the root. Hope this helps

I packet the foils and dont have trouble with bleeds....but will give it a go with just folding next time ...will seem strange im sure
