I am qualified nvq 2 in hairdressing, nvq 2 in make up and currently working towards a nvq 2 in nails.
I currently do a day a week in a hair and beauty salon for work experience (been doin this for the last year)
I was considering going mobile as I am proceeding to level 3 nails next year and cant afford my kit and bus fares all year (as I have just turned 19 the college cant help me out) I have had to do work experience as there are no jobs in my area.
I was wondering if I could do mobile round my area without a car? (as i cant afford one at the moment) I know it probably looks unprofessional and I would have to turn down clients who are too far away to walk to but I cant think of another option at the moment.
I was also talking to a friend of mine who does mobile nails the other day and she says its very fiddly as there are loads of things you have to think of such as a business plan, insurance, advertising, books, making a separate bank account, informing tax etc. I was just looking for help and advice, any would be appreciated, thank you

I wonder if this other nail tech is trying to put you off just a teeny tiny bit!

With regard to the legal part of what you want to do why don't you call the HMRC and tell them what you plan to do and they will advise you with regard to tax etc. I think they might do some kind of business start-up day which may help you.

Call your citizens advice bureau and/or local council to find out if there are any organisations locally who can advise on how to start a business.

As for can you be mobile on foot there are a couple of geeks on this site who do indeed do this.

Maybe you could make up some leaflets to distribute to houses and other businesses to as far as you are prepared to walk to for your mobile work.

Is there a hospital nearby that you could check out, maybe they would let you offer your hair and nail service to recovering patients, or even the staff.

Play groups perhaps, leaflet drop to the Mums.

I'm sure other geeks will supply lots of good advice.

Good luck
