Hi so I have a new client who is 100% grey, previously she's had wella koleston 12/89 with 12% and liked this but I'm guessing this is a high lift tint? I use Matrix but have never used high lift tint on grey hair so curious if anyone has any experience doing this?

I inherited a client like this and the colour just looked white and colourless - was she happy with the colour?

I’m wondering why you would use a highlift tint with 12% on grey hair? Do you mean your client is 100% white with a slight yellow tone to the hair?
Highlifts are designed to lighten and tone in one process but the amount of colour pigment they have for toning is very low compared to say, a level 9 so I’d probably choose a normal tint with 6% instead.

Yeah she said the colour is fine just sometimes goes a bit yellow after a few weeks

I know I don’t understand why they have used a high lift tint.. so she’s naturally 100% grey but sort of mixed with a dark grey but the hair that has been previously coloured is like really white blonde so I’m not sure what I’m best using

Yes it incorrect to use a highlift on that high per cent of grey but if she like the colour then she will probably find using a 9 darker.

I would just do a Fresh consultation from scratch just like you would if you didn’t know the colour

Grey hair as a natural colour doesn’t exist. When clients see grey, what they’re seeing is a mix of white hairs amongst their natural colour. So we usually talk about percentage of grey meaning the mix of white and natural colour. White hair contains a tiny amount of natural colour molecules but not enough to prevent it from appearing colourless.

Once you’ve established what colour she wants to be, you need to work out her natural level 1-10, and then the percentage of white hairs before working out your formula to colour it. Some colour houses produce a ‘percentage of grey’ swatch card to help you work it out.

A highlift tint simply doesn’t contain enough colour pigment to have an effect on white hair. You need to use a level 9 tint or lower. Her previous hairdresser sounds like an inexperienced colourist so this will be a good opportunity to educate your client and demonstrate why she should stick with you. ;)
