SOS!!

Hi all... I need help with my hair. At the moment its very long and VERY thick. As a mum of 3 I rarely have time to do much with it apart from tie it back.
However I'm lead to believe this is why its all breaking off at the front, which has now left me with what looks like 'devil horns'!!

I have stopped pulling it back all the time but it still seems to be breaking. Has the damage been done already or is there something I can do about it?? I use heat defence when I blow dry and straighten it and Ive also been using Argan Oil.

Thanks x

Can you post any pics?
Is it breaking near the root or a few inches further down?
Is this a completely new problem or have you previously noticed periods of excessive breakage?

How long ago since you had your last child? Are you on any new medication?
Do you use protein based hair products?

There are lots of potential reasons for hair breakage so if you can provide a bit more info, we could try to narrow it down a bit. :)

Hi thanks for replying.

Its breaking a few inches away. But getting quite alot of moulting aswell with a really dry itchy scalp.

My youngest is now 2 and it started probably about a year ago but has recently gotten quite bad.

I dont use anything on my hair apart from what i said before. Treseme heat defence and big sexy hair argan oil. I tend to use garnier shampoo n conditioner (the strength and repair one).

No new medication apart from my contraceptive pill which ive changed to the mini pill.

I can try n get a pic but as i washed it last night u cant really tell. I try not colour it as mich as i used to and now only have it done maybe every 2 or 3 months. Its quite a vibrant red could it be that?

Thanks again

Ok, a few thoughts to consider....

Does you shampoo & conditioner have 'added protein' as too much protein can cause hair to become brittle and break off. Moisturising products are often better. Supermarket/high street type shampoos often contain higher levels of detergents in them (cheap bulking agents) and they can be very drying on your scalp. Try to wash your hair and not your scalp when you shampoo. You could also try conditioner first, then shampoo as it seems to work for some people when using OTC products.

When you're pregnant (and also during breastfeeding), your hair doesn't shed as it would normally and so looks and feels much more thick and lush. However, when your hormones settle and it starts to shed naturally again, there's a period when you actually lose a lot of hair in a shorter timescale but it's really just catching up so overall, you're not losing any more hair than you would have done ordinarily during the previous say, 12-18 months.

Health has a huge impact on our hair but it usually takes a couple of months before it becomes noticeable. It's possible that the change in your contraceptive pill could affect your hair and make it more brittle. Also, if you have been on any sort of restrictive diet, that can impact on your hair health too.

When your hair is coloured, does the hairdresser 'refresh' the ends with the same product every time? If she uses an oxidative product, this can cause breakage over time. People who re-apply box colours every few weeks also tend to suffer from breakage and dull hair from over processing.

Finally, how often are you using straighteners and do you use ones that have a temperature control on them? Heated styling tools are often the culprit for breakage around areas of the hair that are naturally more fragile, such as around the face. Over zealous brushing can also be problematic so aim to be gentle and never brush your hair wet, go to bed with wet hair or leave it tied up when still very wet, if possible.
Wet hair is far more vulnerable to breakage than dry hair.

Really hope that some of this might help pinpoint the cause of your hair problems.

I just want to add that at least 4 of my clients hair has deteriorated in condition since using the Treseme heat defence spray.. Coincidence..?

I'd try changing your shampoo as this could be causing your itchy scalp.
I often find certain ones irritate different people. Might be worth investing in a slighter more expensive professional brand if its an issue.

Under the vibrant red is it pre lightened? Or do you know the brand used?
