Hi, 'm hoping someone can give me some advice. I'm taking the plunge and colouring my own hair after 2 recent unsuccessful visits to 2 top end salons who did not listen at all to what I wanted, even though I was very specific and had pictures. I have wasted a small fortune and I'm still not happy with it.

When I tried the 1st salon I was sporting my trustee dark drown to honey blonde dip die that I had had and loved for over a year but wanted a change. I wanted balayage as opposed to dip die and a much less obvious contrast of rich slightly warm chocolate brown with caramel slices through the mid lengths and ends. I won't go into everything that happened but the 1st salon I went back to 4 times and was taken from a flat all over brown to red to dodgy highlights to dark drown, none of which I asked for. Then I went to an even more expensive salon as they were meant to be the best around for balayage, so I felt confident that they would be able to do it and after almost having a heart attack at the cost, which was almost the same as my mortgage, I ended up with a shoddier version of the original dip die I had when it all started and extremely dry, dull looking brassy blonde ends, I went back and complained again and was given a toner which proceeded to wash out in a week! As you can imagine I am pulling my hair out (excuse the pun)

So I figure there's no way I can do a worse job myself and even if it's still not quite right at least it won't have cost me an arm and a leg and practice makes perfect :)

So I've decided I want to free hand some highlights but leaving the ends as they are really dry, I basically want to even out the severe dark to blonde and have a more broken up all over highlighted, balayage effect. I want the over all hue to be a warm golden chestnut level 5-6. At the moment my roots to ends are are dark brown around level 3 with the ends being a dark blonde maybe level 7.

I've got indola bleach powder which I've strand tested with a 10 vol developer as it says it lifts 7 shades with a 20 and I want to keep it as kind to my hair as possible, it worked really well. Where I need the advice is the toner/colour. I've always been a little confused. Is toning just lightened hair the same as older highlights for processing times? And what toner would you recommend? I have wella colour touch 6/37 Dark Gold Brunette Blonde. How do you think this will come out over the new and existing colours and highlights?

I've only coloured my own hair with a single process before, so any advice will be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

that is quite bizarre! i thought if it is a high end salon you would be getting what you want.

you may need a friend to help do the colour, there are different ways of doing a dip dye, dip dyes (ive learned from here) you need a perfect line, that to me is the hardest one to do. ombre is the one where it fades into another colour where you use a comb to blend it into the other colour.

what i do is i start with the root to midlength then comb it, then i get the next colour and point colour (tilt the brush so it doesnt colour the next colour) and then apply from midlength to ends.
then continue on doing the same process until the whole head is covered.

i hope this helps?

Hey, thanks for your response. What I actually want to achieve is balayage highlights as opposed to dip dye, that's what I had before and I want a change, especially as everyone has it now :(

I'm just a little confused about toners and what ones to use after the highlights to get the kind of tones and shade that I want. I have wella colour touch 6/37 and was thinking of getting another to mix? I want to the overall look to be a multitonal warm light chestnut brown, the highlights being more honey caramel than blonde. I'm just not sure how to apply the toner and how it will come out on the dark highlighted hair. Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks. :)

I would go on a recommendation from friends or family where they get their hair done. take pictures of how you would like your hair.
I wouldnt chance colouring your own hair as you may mess it up and have to get it corrected in a salon anyway.
