Looks like you have a nice strong wave to your hair! Your lucky you can pull off both a mid-length natural look or a shorter tidy fade with some crazy wave on top.

Recent mens style is more clean cut/fade up sides & back with a weight line/disconnected top with a messy pompadour look in front kind of like your first pic but a bit shorter in sides-back.(be careful around the burns though as your wave can make hair look sparse if cropped too short there!) & would be best cut freehand clipper over comb.

I think you should keep it more on the square side meaning tapered out a little where your head rounds @ the side top...a good place for a slight weight line. To round of a style makes your face look to round. A square shape in the hair gives a better proportion to your head & can be more square @ any length!

You can also pull off an asymmetrical top too having more length on the left top from the right top so long as the more square shape is kept!...Heres some pics I found for you.
Get a good product like Di:Fi Destruct or CREW fiber for a matt clay hold on dry hair!......I like your fringe off your head for shorter styles or messed up to enhance the wave for mid-length styles!.....remember square, square square shape to the top sides is a must! Suss out an experienced stylist or ask a stranger on the street if you see hair you like where he goes!......I love getting a new request by a regular client getting stopped & asked!
