So, my boyfriend and I are having a disagreement about his hair. He's a black male with longish hair... He was putting perms in it, but didn't do the necessary maintenance required to keep it, so a lot of the hair in the back of his head broke off pretty noticeably. We can brush some of the upper hair to cover it when the hair is straightened, but otherwise you can tell its broken. Its incredibly shorter compared to the rest of his hair. His mother told him its best he gets it all completely cut and restarts the style, and just take care of it better this time - however this is not the main point of the question.

He is afraid that if he does not cut his hair, it will not grow back. I keep telling him that if he takes care of it, and keeps the maintenance up on it, it should grow back - perhaps uneven, but allowing it to grow, then cut it will allow him to keep the style (cause he doesn't really want to lose the style exactly.. This is hard to explain). The break isn't so bad it would be unsightly, it's just a fairly bad break. The argument in question is the fact that he is determined that the hair WILL NOT grow if he doesn't cut it. I told him the hair will, if properly maintained, grow eventually, but he argues with me, based only on the argument of "My Momma told me..."

So what is the truth of it, pros? Will the hair grow back, albeit perhaps uneven and slowly? Or is it completely doomed to never ever grow at all?

(Pictures are available if need be. Also, I am entirely aware of the fact that perhaps it would be "better" for him to cut it and completely restart, but he doesn't want to lose his style - the only reason he is even considering it is because he has the idea in his head that it absolutely will not grow if he doesn't. That, and its bloody cold in Michigan, and he gets cold easy, so the hair typically helps with that...)

Thanks, folks. c:

Yes it will grow back unless were you actually burn your scalp with chemicals and damage the follicles.

The hair that you can see outside of the scalp is already biologically "dead" hardened protein, and therefore cutting it (or breaking it off) will not change how quickly the new hair is formed from deep down inside the follicle.

However there are plenty of myths and old wives tales about this sort of thing. Shaving hair is still thought by many to make hair thicker, (it just creates a blunt end on the hair strands that makes the hair look and feel thicker).

In the past it was also thought that the hair was a tube that would "breath" and that cutting it would make it "bleed" giving popularity to barbers singeing the ends of the hair after cutting in order to "seal" the "tubes".

Having said all that, if the ends of the hair are splitting, the hair can continue splitting higher up the hair shaft, so if the ends are very damaged it might be a good idea to get them cut off. He should probably also get the perm treatments professionally applied, to prevent it getting so brittle again ;)

Now let me ask you a question, how on earth do you pronounce Ypsilanti? =)

Yes it will grow, however, depending on how far the damage goes up the hair it will continue to snap off if he doesn't look after it and trim off the dead ends.
While it's already damaged applying more chemicals WONT help, tell him he needs to look after it properly :)

Alright, thanks guys! He feels a bit better with this info, but more info from others won't hurt. Haha.

Adam, as for Ypsilanti.. How would I explain it over the computer? I know that its not pronounced the way one would think. I suppose the closest way I can explain its pronunciation is "ip-suh-lan-tee".. Hahaha I hope that helps c:

Aha I see :) Thank you!

Can we see picturesv

Yeah, I can upload some photos. Granted the quality is probably horrid.. iPhone flash tends to screw with a lot of the photo.. But his room is not lit enough to get a good photo without it.

It will grow back as it hasn't fallen out its just broken the hair- he needs a good cut!!

Haha. He likes it long. He tries to do the "scene/emo" style with it -- thus the perming and whatnot.

By perming are you talking about curling the hair or straightening?

Straightening. Thats why most of his hair isnt afro-ish in the photos. Normally his hair is incredibly afro-ish and curly. But he had a perm a while ago and most of it is still around. Not as straight as it was, though...

Oh to me a perm means making got curly - chemical straightening is what I call what he had.
Tell him if he wants straight hair to invest in a good set of straighteners and stop frying his hair!
