Hi girls,
I'm not a hairdresser, would like some advice on my hair, I'm natural brown(medium), this time last year I had a colour put in my hair that went wrong, it was to cover lightened hair, the colour was supposed to be close to my natural colour but came out near black, my hairdresser tried covering this with lighter brown and golden highlights, so far it's about 3/4 grown out, this year I had balayage for about 6 weeks and got bored and then decided I wanted a vibrant red, it washed out very quickly(less than 2weeks) & is very patchy, I'm thinking it's all the different colours in my hair causing this, my hairdresser is very pricey & would like the heads up going in what you geeks think I need done?
Any advice would be appreciated

Of price is an issue, try your local college, they are much cheaper than a salon.

Apart from that we are not allowed to advise a consumer on chemical products. What. I will say, if you carry on with all those processes too often you won't need to worry about what colour, as it will be ruined and snap off.

Please visit a training college where they can do this for you with minimal damage to your hair :)

I don't thinks she's asking what colour mix to put in her hair. I think she's asking what to tell her expensive hairdresser who can't get it right.

In all honesty. If your hairdresser can't get it right and still charges you I'd go looking for a new hairdresser. Ask your friends or someone you see who you think has nice hair who they see.

No I'm not asking what to put in my hair, I probably wrote that arse ways! Sorry

What I'm asking is,
Would you think all the different colours in my hair over the past year is causing my semi permanent red go patchy after wash out?
Should I get my hair stripped?

I have recently changed to a new hairdresser so it's no fault of there's, I wrongly went to someone previously who ruined my hair colour and I'm still trying to grow that crap out :(

A bright red semi will always fade very quickly, within a week if you wash your hair frequently.

Depending on how vibrant you want it, you could ask for a quasi or permanent which should last longer.

Also, the salon should retail you a product such as crazy colour or fudge paintbox that you can apply at home to prolong the colour between salon visits. Apply it to dry rather than damp hair also seems to help.

Great thanks for the advice, I will be asking for a permanent colour tomorrow then :) I do wash my hair almost every day so it makes sense a semi permanent colour wouldn't work :)

It can be due to uneven porosity in your hair. I bet it's faded on the lighter but mainly.

I agree with the above advice but if you want to make it last ask them to pre colour the hair to make it hold better.

I have red hair over some lighter pieces and have no fade ever, you have to use quality colour and the matching aftercare x

In my opinion, if the hair is porous due to lots of different colour applications, then a semi-permanent would be best. You'll probably find that there are a few types of semis - ones that last 6-8 washes right up to ones that can last better than permanent due to your hair condition.

If you are set on the vibrant red still, get a semi or quasi colour put on it (I call my quasi a semi to clients as they understand this better) such as Wella Colour Touch then ask your stylist about Wella Colour Fresh which you can purchase that will keep the colour vibrant whilst you are in between appointments. Id also suggest getting a salon quality shampoo and conditioner for two reasons - 1. Keep your colour as brilliant as you can 2. Keep the condition good so the colour will last as well as it can. Wella Colour Recharge are good at this as they do a red shampoo and conditioner. One of my friends works in a salon and uses a shampoo called Fabuloso which is super vibrant. That may suit your hair too.

Maybe get a good cut to get rid of some of the dry hair also.

You sound like a client with a million ideas so that's also why I would suggest a semi/quasi - as if you have a permanent red this week and decide on a new colour in six weeks time it will be a lot easier to shift!

All the best

I'm definitely guilty of being the client with a million ideas, I get so bored so easily of my hair colour!!
So I've had my hair redone, and I'm so happy with it :)
I had an all over colour put in to even out the colour and then a couple days later a permanent red put in, no patches!!
I think I could be sticking with this colour for a long while,
Thank you all for your advice, much appreciated x
