Hi Guys

Firstly, I'm not a hairdresser im actually joe public after advice

When I was younger my hair was always a chocolatey dark brown, although in the summer it would get a reddish cast to it.

As I've gotten older, my hair has begun to just get darker and darker (apart from 3 small strands at the front which are grey). From a distance it pretty much looks black, but close up you can see it's still shades of really dark brown.

It's far too dark for my complexion. I just look completely washed out when I don't have makeup on.

Last summer, I spoke to my hairdresser about the possibility of lightening or ombré on my hair because of how dark it is. She clipped a sample off and told me she would see if the dye would take.

The next time I was in, I asked her about it. She said she managed to get the faintest slight copper cast to the hair, but that it didn't actually lighten or blonde up at all.

I'm just wondering if this is at all possible??

I keep seeing pictures of other people with hair as dark as mine that have changed from this colour to caramel or even white blonde. They've even lightened enough to get all the crazy colours in. Hell, I've even seen Afro hair be dyed blonde, so my question is - is it actually possible that my hair can't be lightened ? Is it just a case of another salon that uses a different product would be able to do it?

Thanks in advance

Do you know what she used? If its all your natural i wouldve thought youd be able to get it lighter really. Although if your hair is that dark and you were to have ombre etc, it would probably look nicer lifting it only a few shades rather than lifting to a big contrast

I think she used Wella. All her wall charts, colour charts and other stuff is Wella anyway.

I don't want to go actual blonde. I've seen a gorgeous ombré style that is actually a more caramel colour. I have a screen shot of it from another salons Instagram page, but I'm not sure how to post pictures on here ?

My own hair is all natural, I haven't dyed it at all

The hairdresser might have used a tint to lift the hair, could you go back and find out & if they did ask them to do another test cut using bleach? I'm sure you'd get a better result, as you said even the darkest hair can be lifted to some extent, I'd go back and ask to have it done again or find a different salon and try again :)

Thank you!

I'm debating going into the other salon and asking them to take a look. They're a bit more expensive, but if I get the result I want then I can take the hit.

I do have a weird hairdresser phobia though, but that's another issue all together ha ha

A lot of people have hairdresser phobias lol, bad experiences are lifelong burdens for some people, I personally hate getting my hair done & I am a hairdresser! Lol

Try to find a nice salon where your really welcomed and explain your worries to them, if their good they'll take on board everything you say and make it the best possible experience for you :) that's what I would do if you were coming to me :)

Price won't matter if your happy with your hair I'm sure

Good luck!

Mine stems from my lovely long hair being cut unnaturally short twice at 2 different salons "by accident" ha ha. I have a funny shaped head and face, I can't do short hair.

I think I'll try the new salon over the weekend and see how I feel when I get in there. I love my hairdresser, and went back to her last year after not going at all for several, but she is having a few problems with her salons at present and getting an appointment is impossible. I rang on the 6th January for a trim and they couldn't get me in until March!!
